On February 22nd at the Faculty of Economics and Business, the talk "Challenges and Opportunities in the Transformation of the Regional Economy", given by Mr. Andrés Carrillo González, took place.

Minister of Finance and Public Administration of the Region of Murcia.

Mr. Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Dr. D. Samuel Baixauli Soler acted as host.

Before a packed room, the Minister of Finance and AA.PP.

He outlined the main challenges and opportunities facing the Regional Economy.

It began by showing the national macroeconomic evolution, in terms of GDP evolution, which has chained three years, 12 consecutive quarters of growth above 3%, being one of the fastest growing economies in the EU.

Below I describe the main characteristics of this growth, supported by a strong external sector, in 2017 the non-energy exports of the Region grew 17 percent, the contribution of exports in the regional GDP have gone from representing 15.7 % in the year 2009, to assume 35.62% in the year 2017 (expected data).

The second key element has been the reduction of the Debt Stock accumulated by Companies, Families and AA.PP.

At this point, together with the exporting strength, the counselor put in value the effort that the agents that form the Murcian economy had made in these two important aspects.

Regarding the support that is being provided by the Regional Government, it has placed value on investment in infrastructure, administrative simplification and commitment to human capital as the engine of future development, and elements that will allow the regional economy to support the growth of recent years.

To conclude the conference, he highlighted 2 of the main challenges we are facing and in which the Regional Government is working, first of all to value human capital, and second, to bet on the digital transformation of our economy , underpinning and supporting the transformation that is taking place in companies, and being an AA.PP.

that bets on its own digital transformation.

Regarding Human Capital, he made special emphasis on the importance of Continuing Education and valued the work of the University by training the best professionals who should be part of this new economy.
