Huerta Viva proposes to the plenary session the rehabilitation and protection of the Aljufía canal (20/02/2018)

The conservation of this rich hydraulic heritage and its surroundings would entail the signaling of a route to know the history of the ditch, its biodiversity and the operation of traditional irrigation.

The main canal of Aljufía, whose origins go back to the 9th-10th centuries, is deeply linked to the history of Murcia and its orchard.

It was born on the left bank of the Murcia High Dam or Contraparada, and its construction was vital in supplying water to the city and allowing the irrigation of the northern garden and the almunias located next to the medieval wall.

In addition, it has moved for centuries several mills and factories of great importance to Murcia, such as Seda and Salitres.

To its value as a living archaeological heritage that is still in use today, we must add the environmental and landscape benefits that can be seen especially in the section of garden best preserved between the Jerónimos monastery and the wheel of La Ñora .

In its margins there are still some specimens of elms and poplars that shelter a rich bird life, and in its waters begin to see again eels, barbels and the leprous turtle.

Despite these values, the ditch lacks protection and many sections are in poor condition, with large walls of the masonry retaining wall collapsed, occupied margins, areas without vegetation and most of the constructions linked to the runway in a dilapidated state , many of them still not cataloged or protected.

Faced with this situation, Huerta Viva has proposed to all political groups the presentation of a joint motion for the Aljufía major canal to be included in the Catalog of buildings and protected elements of the General Urban Plan, in addition to all buildings (mills) , bridges, etc.), trees, and ethnographic and landscape values that are associated with the channel.

This is intended to create a specific regulation to ensure its preservation and research.

It also calls for the drafting and implementation of a comprehensive project of channel rehabilitation and environmental improvement of the environment, in collaboration with the Board of Landowners and the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura.

This project would focus first on the most valuable stretch between the wheel of La Ñora and the Funes mill in La Albatalía.

This rehabilitation with cultural and environmental criteria would have a very favorable impact on the return of almost disappeared aquatic species.

Finally, the signage of a pedestrian and cyclist route that facilitates the citizenship to know the history of the ditch, its environmental values and the operation of the traditional irrigation network is necessary.

This route would allow the connection of the center of the city with the Contraparada and other routes through the Huerta.
