The field work in San Esteban starts with the lodging of pilgrims and the religious group of the Medieval Murcia (19/02/2018)

Presentation before the Committee of Experts of the 'Phase 0', which will mean the opening to Murcia of the site from the second half of this year, which may contemplate in situ the work of excavation and restoration of the archaeological remains of the 12th and 13th century.

An itinerary will allow you to visit some of the streets of Medieval Murcia and access these two monumental sites.

The Master Plan establishes a roadmap in which the phases and the budget for the recovery of both the site and the garden and the San Esteban Ensemble (Church and urban environment) have been set.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, presided today the third meeting of the Committee of Experts of San Esteban, in which he realized the approval of the Master Plan and presented the 'Phase 0' of the action, which is going to suppose the opening to Murcia from the site from the second half of this year, who can contemplate in situ the work of excavation and restoration of the archaeological remains of the twelfth and thirteenth century, for which the City Council will have a specialized team of the University of Murcia.

Specifically, 'Phase 0' establishes two sectors in which field work will be located.

Sector 1 includes a lodging for pilgrims and merchants of Murcia from the XII-XIII centuries.

It is a large building with a central courtyard, a 'funduk' from the Islamic period.

Sector 2 includes the religious group, formed by the cemetery (maqbara) and a Mudejar oratory.

Both sectors are connected by a wide street that will be enabled as an itinerary that will allow you to visit some of the streets of Medieval Murcia and access these two monumental sites, while the specialists carry out the archaeological works, document new areas, and consolidate and restore the preserved architectural structures.

"Phase 0 is the opening and social recovery of San Esteban in 2018, after a complex and productive process of research and study, supported by experts and citizen participation.

This process of consensus has required effort, time and dedication on the part of all, but it is what today gives us strong social and specialized support, and ensures excellence in this intervention, "said José Ballesta.

The project is already defined and the next step will be the signing of an agreement with the University of Murcia, for the start of field work and guided visits to the framework of Arrabal de la Arrixaca Nueva.

The research will be coordinated by Jorge Eiroa, archaeologist and full professor of the Department of Prehistory, Archeology, Ancient History, Medieval History and Historiographic Sciences and Techniques of the UMU), who is also part of the Committee of San Esteban Experts.

What diet followed the twentieth century Murcia?

The field work will last for two months, after which a specialized research will be carried out in collaboration with different national and international laboratories, which will complete the work developed at the University of Murcia.

This research will encompass different archaeological, anthropological and restoration aspects.

Thus, we contemplate a series of Carbon 14 analytics that allow us to specify the chronology of the bones found in the cemetery, as well as a Mitochondrial DNA study to define possible kinship relationships.

A stable isotope analysis will also be carried out on the skeletal remains, to define the diet of the inhabitants of El Arrabal.

These and other studies will be decisive for the definitive value of the site and the future Interpretation Center.

The Master Plan sets the phases and budgets

After the 'Phase 0', the Master Plan - the guide document made by a specialized multidisciplinary team, which includes both the enhancement of the site, the recovery of the garden for its social use and the San Esteban Ensemble (Church and environment) Urban) - establishes a roadmap in which three other Phases and their corresponding budgets have been set.

Phase I includes the continuation of the archeology work, its musealization and the execution of the Interpretation Center that will allow this 24,000 m2 environment - the largest archaeological site currently existing in Europe with these characteristics - to become a focus of tourist, cultural and leisure attractions in our country.

This also includes the urbanization works of streets, squares and the surroundings of the San Esteban Complex.

The estimated budget for the execution of these works, which are projected for 24 months, is 17.5 million euros.

Phase II includes the extension of the exhibition area and new archeology works, the maintenance of the Interpretation Center and the tourist promotion of San Esteban as an angular piece of the 'Murcia Medieval' action plan, which will allow the recovery of the medieval identity of the city and discover how he lived and felt a Murcia from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.

The estimated budget is 4.7 million euros.

Phase III establishes the prioritized excavation of the Expositive Reserve, in order to complete the value enhancement of the Archaeological Complex of Arrabal de la Arrixaca Nueva, in which 75 dwellings of different archaeological value have been counted, 4 enclosures, 24 streets, as well as the 'maqbara' or Arab cemetery and the oratory.
