Huermur demands real agility in the restoration of the Islamic tower of Zarandona (13/02/2018)

Huermur is interested in the restoration works that are being carried out in the medieval Islamic tower located next to the Molino del Batán, in the hamlet of Zarandona.

Huermur reproaches that the works accumulate almost a year late, since the City of Murcia announced repeatedly the enhancement of this monument declared of Cultural Interest.

The association questions that only the Islamic tower is being restored while the nearby and historic Molino del Batán located on the Azarbe Mayor del Norte, which is part of the same BIC, is being degraded by leaps and bounds. Therefore, it requests a global and urgent action on all the patrimonial set.

The Association for the Conservation of the Garden and the Heritage of Murcia (Huermur) requires the City of Murcia and the Ministry of Culture of the Autonomous Community, real agility in the restoration of the historic medieval Islamic watch tower called Torre del Moro o Torre del Batán, located in the middle of Murcia's orchard, in the hamlet of Zarandona.

This fortification, whose date could be placed around the XII or XIII centuries, in the effervescence of the Islamic exploitation of the Huerta de Murcia, holds the status of a historical monument declared of Cultural Interest (BIC), and presents considerable dimensions, with 12 meters of side and about 144 square meters of surface built in tapial of mortar of lime.

This building is attributed to a tower of raal or real;

that is, a fortification that sought the prestige of the owners of the lands it dominated.

Members of Huermur visited the site a few days ago to observe the progress of the work, and were able to check on site how while working in the Islamic tower, the Molino del Batán, located a few meters and within the BIC monument delimitation , continues degrading itself without any administration doing anything to avoid it.

All this in spite of the denunciations presented by Huermur for the poor state of conservation of the mill, and where the urgent need to arbitrate the necessary measures for its effective conservation was already communicated.

In this way, from Huermur request the two administrations involved to carry out a global action on the whole heritage, which includes the medieval tower, the Molino del Batán, the section of the ditch of the Azarbe Mayor del Norte and the environment of BIC protection.

Being especially urgent the establishment of a plan of integral restoration of the mill given the continuous robberies and expolios that this hydraulic monument is suffering and its current situation.

Something that is not contemplated in the performances that are being executed, and that would avoid that this protected mill be degraded even more, thus preventing Murcia and its garden from losing another part of its history linked to this important hydraulic mill.

Finally from the conservationist association, they urge the City of Murcia to increase the security of these buildings and strengthen police surveillance in the area, since the environment of the monument has become a real dump and dump, encentrándose also plagued by painted and graffiti that degrade and deteriorate good.

Finally, Huermur expects a restoration and full recovery of heritage and landscape of these historic elements of the garden and its protective environment, making them understandable and interpretable in the landscape huertano, avoiding the proliferation of buildings and buildings that attempt against these goods protected, and that is not finished just landscaping the area and turning this set into something totally decontextualized, since leaving an Islamic tower and a centennial mill in a garden parterre would be a new nonsense with a heritage of all Murcia.
