War on the processionary in more than 2,500 pines of Murcia and districts (10/02/2018)

The Department of Modernization of Administration, Urban Quality and Participation, directed by José Guillén, through the Parks and Gardens Service, is already working on the elimination of the so-called caterpillar of the 'processionary' (Thaumetopea pityocamba) in the pines of the municipal green areas.

This is because this year there have been a few months of December and January atypical in terms of high temperatures, which has meant an early appearance of these insects.

"Our objective is based on a premise: we must act in the presence of this insect as a priority, for this we use several methods of action: if it is an isolated bag, in the municipal green areas, it is eliminated manually by the members of parks and gardens If the tree has a considerable amount of these caterpillars what we do is a spraying of a specific, biological substance, which eradicates it without assuming any damage to the specimen ", explains the mayor of Modernization, Urban Quality and Participation, José Guillén.

Likewise, Guillén has indicated that "we are also implementing a novel method that consists in performing endotherapy treatments on pine trees, in order to tackle the problem".

During the month of October, preventive tasks are carried out while at this time the treatment of the more than 2,500 existing pines, which occur in Murcia and districts, is carried out.
