Intelligent technology reaches pedestrian crossings to improve the safety of people with visual impairment (08/02/2018)

The Pasblue system is already in operation in 25 pedestrian crossings, and in the next six months, it will be installed in another 29 crossings of the city and districts Technology is put at the service of the blind people, facilitating their day to day in the municipality and providing them with greater security and autonomy in their daily journeys

The councilman of Traffic and Public Safety, Lola Sanchez, the councilor of Social Rights, Conchita Ruiz, and the territorial delegate of the ONCE, Juan Carlos Morejón de Girón, visited this morning the neighborhood of Infante Juan Manuel, at the intersection between Pío Baroja and Valle Inclán streets, where a traffic light adapted for people with visual disabilities and equipped with Pasblue system has already been installed, enabling the device to be activated with the mobile phone.

This action is part of a plan of the City Council which will double the number of pedestrian crossings of the urban area and districts with this latest generation technology, which is activated by mobile phone, an initiative framed within the project of smart city ' MiMurcia 'that is driving the City Council.

In this way, this intelligent system has been presented in which technology is put at the service of people and which, in this case, directly benefits the group of blind people, facilitating their daily life in the municipality and providing them with greater security and autonomy. in their daily movements.

Currently, Murcia has this service in 25 pedestrian crossings of 11 streets.

Before the month of June will be installed in another 29 steps of pedestrians of 12 roads of the urban helmet and districts.

To these are added the acoustic signals installed in practically all the traffic lights, which are activated when this starts the green phase.

The system starts up when it detects, by means of Bluetooth technology, the mobile phone of a pedestrian with visual impairment.

At that moment, the acoustic signals of the semaphore are automatically activated, without the passerby having to press any button or mechanism.

"The crossings where the mechanism is being installed are integrated into the road network of the urban area of the city and districts, where there is a high concentration of people and vehicle movements that must be made compatible with pedestrians, adopting measures of surveillance, control and traffic regulation that improve road safety and mobility, "explained Councilwoman Lola Sánchez.

Conchita Ruiz stressed that "thanks to the installation of this technology improves accessibility and safety at the intersections of pedestrians with visual deficiencies, also avoiding noise pollution, since the traffic lights emit sound only when the pedestrian really needs it" .

Different sounds and frequencies

The acoustic information of Pasblue is of three types that are differentiated by the frequency and duration of the sounds.

Thus, there is the orientation tone, which is useful for the user to approach and be in the area where the intersection begins;

this is replaced by a passing tone, to begin the crossing;

and, finally, the end-of-step sound is heard, which allows the user to know when the pedestrian green light will end.

During the next months they will be placed at the crossroads of the street Apio with Transformador de Patiño (2 steps of pedestrians);

Sewer road with Av. Rincón de Seca de Nonduermas (1 pedestrian crossing);

Av. La Raya with Father Martínez de La Raya (4 pedestrian crossings);
