Murcia is an intelligent city model thanks to the innovation project applied to the local management 'MiMurcia', valued by the Ministry of Industry as the most ambitious of all Spain.

The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Modernization of Administration, Urban Quality and Participation, José Guillén, inaugurated today the First Global Urban Intelligence Conference, which turns Murcia today and tomorrow into the epicenter of the debate on the future of the cities and the latest advances in technological development applied to the urban environment.

During these two days there will be a thousand national and international participants and some thirty speakers of the stature of the philosopher Elsa Punset, who this morning gave his lecture 'Is technology dehumanizing society?'

and the expert in cybersecurity Chema Alonso, who has reflected on how to survive the Internet era during his conference 'Are our cities safe?'.

Murcia is an intelligent city model thanks to the innovation project applied to the local management 'MiMurcia', valued by the Ministry of Industry as the most ambitious of all Spain, in competitive competition with 111 cities in the call of Red.es.

In this regard, the mayor reported that "we have already started the pilot tests of the smart management of the city with the installation of the first sensors and soon we will start to see smart traffic lights, lights that turn on when detecting the presence of pedestrians, wifi in the squares and public spaces of the municipality and other elements designed to facilitate the daily life of Murcia. "

The inaugural session, which was held at the Víctor Villegas Auditorium, was attended by the general director of La Verdad, Antonio González, and the director of said newspaper, Alberto Aguirre, the media partner in the organization of this international event.

A new Renaissance in the 21st century

During his speech, José Ballesta stressed that "currently the pace of growth of cities is the highest in the history of mankind: more than half of the globe currently lives in cities.

Never before has the world been so urban "and stressed that" cities are the places where talent, creativity and knowledge are concentrated, which is the raw material of this new social model ".

"Now, in this 21st century that has just begun, we are witnessing a new Renaissance, a new humanism, in which people are the center of the new social order, cities their natural and preferential habitat, and we lead a digital life without that we should lose sight of an essential premise: technology is nothing without people, "reflected the mayor.

"Technology can not only make the city more efficient and more sustainable, but also more equitable, breaking social, cultural and other barriers.

Promoting a Smart City can not consist in advancing only in the technological and instrumental aspects.

Our concept of Smart City is to put these technological advances at the service of people to improve their quality of life. "

"Maybe we should think less about bites, Gates and bitcoins and do it more in Miguel Ángel, Rafael, Leonardo, Lope de Vega, Velázquez and Cervantes," concluded the first mayor.
