José Ballesta defends that Murcia taxi drivers have "the same rights" as those in other cities with airports (05/02/2018)

The taxi drivers transfer to the mayor his request that "the planned stop in Corvera is for exclusive use for taxi drivers in the municipality of Murcia, as occurs in Madrid, Alicante or San Javier."

The mayor said that there are three principles that support the vindication of the 290 taxi professionals in the municipality: "The law, the general interest and the principle of equality."

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the councilor for Finance and Contracting, Eduardo Martínez-Oliva, held a meeting this morning with the president of the Radio Taxi cooperative, Sergio Navarro, and a group of taxi drivers from Murcia, where he was approached the provision of services at the International Airport of the Region of Murcia, located in the hamlet of Corvera Murcia.

The taxi drivers transferred to the mayor his request that "the scheduled stop at the Corvera Airport is exclusively for taxi drivers in the municipality of Murcia, as is currently the case in other aerodromes such as Madrid, Alicante or San Javier".

José Ballesta showed his support to the taxi drivers and promised to intercede for the interests of Murcian professionals in the taxi sector, "first of all, because the law protects them.

Both the Regional Law of the Taxi Sector of 2014 and the Municipal Ordinance of 2015 establish that it is the municipal corporations that have the capacity to give the enabling permits to carry out their work within the municipality, "the mayor explained.

"Second," continued the mayor, "because the general interest legitimates it, both because of the public interest of all users of the future airport and because of the fact that the largest fleet of taxis in the entire region is in the municipality. of Murcia, with 290 licenses currently granted ".

"Third, because there is a principle of equality that applies in the whole of Spain.

In the airports that are currently in operation the taxi drivers who exercise are those of the municipality and we do not understand that in Murcia it has to be different from what happens in the rest of Spain, since Murcia professionals have the same rights as the rest " , stressed José Ballesta.

From Radio Taxi argue that taxi drivers in the municipality in which the airport is located are those who provide the service, with the rates and conditions set by the municipal administration.

However, this exclusivity does not prevent sporadic services from being provided prior accreditation, so that, for example, a passenger from Lorca could hire a taxi driver from that city to pick him up.

In the same way, a taxi driver from any city can take a passenger to the airport, although he could not pick up any from there.

Taxi Law

The regulations of the taxi (Regulatory Law of the Public Transport of Persons in a vehicle of tourism by means of Taxi in the Region of Murcia - Regional Law of the Taxi, 10 / 2014-) establishes that it is the City Councils that grant the taxi licenses for their municipal territory and when the taxi driver provides his service by interurban areas, it will correspond to the CARM the authorization of that authorization, which will be complementary to the previous one.
