The City Council extends extracurricular activities for the 23,000 students of the Murcian institutes (31/01/2018)

José Ballesta, the directors of the 27 Secondary Education centers and the representatives of the students sign the agreement by which the City Council subsidizes the workshops, courses and extracurricular activities in this course 2017/18 with 110,000 euros.

The City Council has increased the amount by 10% compared to last year, subsidizing a total of 159 extracurricular activities, 30 more than the previous year.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, the directors of the 27 Secondary Education Institutes of the municipality and students of the School Council of each center, today signed the agreement by which the City subsidizes with 110,000 euros the promotion and implementation of activities extracurricular in this course 2017/18.

The event, which was attended by the Councilor for Youth and Development Cooperation, Rebeca Pérez, and the Councilor for Education, Rafael Gómez, took place in the Dean Institute of Murcia and the third oldest in Spain, Alfonso X El Sabio, on the occasion of the center's 180th anniversary.

The City Council has increased the amount by 10% compared to last year, bringing to the 27 institutes of the municipality a total of 159 extracurricular activities, 30 more than the previous year.

With an average amount of about 4,000 euros per center, the projects and workshops that are taught outside school hours have received a total or partial subsidy and are directed "to the community of students of Secondary School of Murcia, composed of a total of 23,000 students ", Underlined José Ballesta.

"This complementary training transcends the merely academic.

It supposes an integral formation in values ​​and ethical principles in a decisive moment of the life as it is the adolescence, so that our young people are tomorrow not only excellent professionals but also people committed to their social and family environment ", highlighted José Ballesta, who added that "after four years without granting these aids, last year we decided to recover them with great success, which this year we have overcome".

Prevention of school and gender violence

Of the projects presented, this course has seen an increase in activities related to educational values: health education, environmental, school violence prevention or gender violence.

Likewise, activities related to robotics and new technologies have increased.

They also emphasize the workshops related to various artistic disciplines: theater, music, photography, literature, plastic arts or comics.

Another novelty in this course is chess workshops and inclusive activities through sports.

The activities -some of which began to be taught at the beginning of the course while others will do so throughout this 2018- have been proposed by the centers themselves.

It is the institutes that inform students of the specific offer of their center.

Specifically, the beneficiary centers are the 25 Institutes of Secondary Education (IES) of the municipality, as well as the School of Art and the Center for Infant and Basic Education of Corvera (CPEIBas), in which Primary and Secondary education are shared .

Advice for young people and stays abroad

As a complement to the subsidized activities, the Department of Youth and Development Cooperation also offers this school year the following programs: Youth counseling and youth information points, European programs for young people, Language stays abroad, Language club, Camps of summer, Leisure activities and free time on weekends (Networks for Free Time) and the CreaMurcia Contest.

On the other hand, the City Council also offers aid for the development of sports activities, through the program 'Sport in School Age' that finances the Department of Sports and Health.
