UMU celebrated the feast of Santo Tomás and the investiture of the Italian professor Irene Bragantini as doctor honoris (26/01/2018)

The University of Murcia (UMU) celebrated today, January 26, the feast of St. Thomas Aquinas, which on this occasion also included the ceremony of investiture as honorary doctor of the Italian professor of Archeology Irene Bragantini.

In the one that has constituted the last celebration of Santo Tomás that it presides, since it does not appear to the re-election, the rector, Jose Orihuela, has said of its mandate that we have not wanted to wash our hands with respect to our obligations;

we no longer wanted a university run by the consumer market or by the oligarchies that had been managing it at their whim, relying on a false concept of representative democracy.

The act, which has counted in several moments with the performance of the group of Chamber of the UMU Orchestra, directed by Jorge Losana, has begun with the delivery of the extraordinary end-of-grade awards, which has followed the delivery of the extraordinary doctoral awards.

The ceremony of investiture of new doctors and doctors has followed then, for, then, proceed to the delivery of the Medals to the University Dedication.

NEW DOCTOR HONORIS CAUSE

The inauguration of Professor Bragantini, from the University of Naples La Oriental, as the new honorary doctor for the UMU has begun with the exhibition of the laudatio, which has been in charge of the UMU professor José Miguel Noguera, who has highlighted the most outstanding features of his biography and his numerous contributions in the field of Archeology as a teacher and researcher.

Bragantini, meanwhile, has made a series of reflections on Roman painting, to which he has dedicated what has been a masterly lesson, and in which he has had as a culmination a special reference to the excavations that are carried out in El Molinete, in Cartagena.

On these, he has valued very positive contribution of public and private contributions to make the excavations possible, along with the collaboration of university institutions and local entities.

The act, which has been developed in the Faculty of Economics and Business, in the Espinardo campus, has been closed with the intervention of the rector, who has made a balance of the main achievements of his administration in these four years of mandate that soon they will become true.

He has started with words of thanks for the members of his government team, for the collaboration they have given him, and he has placed special emphasis on highlighting what has been achieved in terms of research and in the promotion of the PDI and PAS, with the convocation of places and the retributive improvements.

He pointed out that I must confess that when we began our career as a university executive, we did not know many of the financial difficulties and regulatory obstacles that we later came to understand with great frustration, but also with the determined purpose of fighting for the collective and offering society some reward for the efforts that this gives us.

And he added that our dedication has been especially directed to the attention of the most fragile part of the system and, at the same time, of potentially more productive sectors, without forgetting that we are already a centenary university and that the foundations of the academic and scientific structure they must be refreshed, restored and reinforced.

Later he commented that we are already a research university, to refer then to the main achievements in the matter.

It has also indicated that the last audited accounts, corresponding to the year 2016, represent the first in the recent history of the UMU without any exception.

Nor has he forgotten to refer to the recovery of the full day of interim personnel, the improvement of working conditions of more than three hundred positions and the signing of the multi-year funding plan, signed with the Autonomous Community.

Among the improvements regarding the PDI, he said that 457 full-time professors have been promoted, with a staff of 1,425.

And in the economic issue has highlighted that the UMU Budgets have gone from 178 million in 2014 to 215 million in 2018.

Likewise, he recalled the projection of the presence of the King at the opening ceremony of the 2015-2016 academic year.

Orihuela has concluded his speech by saying that I have worked for those in whom I believe, and no one can dislodge from me the idea that, despite the suffering caused by facing the real powers, the immobility, if you will, you can.

Against all odds, once again.
