The Platform for Heritage obtains the BIC declaration for the Cascales Institute building (25/01/2018)

The Institute, located in a building of the eighteenth century headquarters of the former College of Theologians of San Isidoro and the first Provincial Institute, is a symbol of the educational institutions of the city and one of the reference buildings of the urban front near the Segura River.

The declaration of Cultural Interest Asset, with category of monument, for the building that today houses the IES Licensed Francisco Cascales started with a request prepared by the association Huerta Viva, formant of the Platform for the Defense of the Cultural Heritage of Murcia.

Application that once processed by the General Direction of Cultural Assets has concluded in the decree that, in the day of yesterday, made effective this declaration.

The Platform has been marking as one of its objectives the safeguard of a series of historical landmarks of the city that did not have specific protection, as was the case of the Floridablanca garden, declared a BIC, with a historic garden category, in April of the year past.

In the case of the Cascales Institute building, this is one of the components of the historic facade of the city of Murcia, with its own 18th-century Murcia architecture, forming a valuable complex with various buildings such as the Church of San Juan de Dios, the old Seminary of San Fulgencio and the Episcopal Palace.

It also highlights the cultural value it represents for the city and the Region of Murcia for centuries, by hosting the former College of Theologians of San Isidoro, one of the foundations of Cardinal Belluga, and later be the headquarters of the Provincial Institute of Second Education , the third of those created in Spain.

Since 1837 has been fulfilling this work, despite the name changes experienced after the Civil War, when it was baptized as Alfonso X Institute, moving to host other secondary schools after the transfer of the latter to the neighborhood of Vistalegre in 1966 , like the institutes Floridablanca, Infante Juan Manuel and Licenciado Cascales.

In addition, emphasizes its connection with the first attempts to establish a university in Murcia during the nineteenth century.

Inside, interesting spaces are preserved, such as the central patio with exposed brick, the main marble staircase, with a wooden railing and a tile base, or the function room.

The BIC declaration affects in the same way various movable assets that constitute an essential part of its history, such as the set of eighteenth-century canvases made for the former College of Theologians, which today are located in the Alfonso X IES. return to its place of origin to be an indissoluble part of the new monument.

On the occasion of the declaration, the Platform intends to organize guided tours of the building with the collaboration of former teachers of the center.
