Murcia promotes domestic recycling with the action 'Cook and Recycle' This initiative, which will have the collaboration of the cultural centers of the municipality, aims to promote among Murcia proper waste management in the domestic field o (16/01/2018)

The City of Murcia, through the Department of Development, which directs Roque Ortiz, Ferrovial and Ecoembes, the non-profit environmental organization that promotes the circular economy through recycling, have launched the action 'Cooking and Recycling' , based on a recipe contest aimed at all Murcia which aims to encourage the separation of waste in the kitchen.

Within this initiative, the cultural centers of the city will host, from January 29 to February 16, monologues on recycling by the Murcian humorist Miguel Kalderas.

This seeks to inform and raise awareness, through humor, about the containers that must be deposited both in the yellow container (plastic containers, cans and briks) and in the blue container (paper and cardboard containers).

In this way, the initiative will reach the districts whose cultural centers, dependent on the Department of Employment, Tourism and Culture, request it and that, according to forecasts, will be about thirty.

There, all attendees will receive information on how to participate in the 'I Contest Kitchen and Recycling', in order that citizens of Murcia demonstrate their culinary skills and recyclers through the presentation of a recipe.

Those interested can find more information about this contest on the website www.cocinayrecicla.es or at the participating cultural centers themselves.

In the forms it will have to reflect what is the recipe (accompanied by a photo or video), how it has been prepared and how the containers of the waste generated have been managed.

The participants whose recipes are awarded, valuing different elaboration criteria such as originality, ingredients, techniques and waste management, will enjoy a master class in cooking and recycling at the 'Gran Gala Cocina y Recicla'.

The winner of a Michelin star chef, Susi Díaz, will be in charge of teaching this class on sustainable cooking, on February 27 at the Tourist Qualification Center, using typical products from Murcia and paying special attention to the packaging waste generated during its preparation.

It will be in this act where the winner of the 'I Contest Kitchen and Recycling' is announced, selecting the best recipe among all the winners.

Recycling in the municipality of Murcia

Murcia are every day more aware of the environment.

Proof of this is that, in 2016, more than 5.6 million light containers were recycled, 6.5% more than the previous year.

In particular, each citizen deposited an average of 12.1 kg in the yellow container (plastic containers, cans and briks) and 11.3 kg in the blue container (paper and cardboard containers), which represents an increase of 7 , 4% with respect to 2015.

Regarding the total paper and cardboard collected in 2017 (amounting to 6,834,634 kilos), 1,438,016 kilos were delivered by merchants through the door-to-door collection service.

As for glass, of the 6,883,060 kilos collected last year, 580,600 were deposited by the innkeepers in door-to-door service.

This has been possible thanks to the work that Ecoembes has developed together with the City of Murcia, getting closer and closer to the citizen through the network of 1,389 yellow and 1,320 blue containers available throughout the city.
