Students from CEIP La Arboleda in Santiago and Zaraiche collect the harvest from their school garden (10/01/2018)

The Councilor for Urban Planning, Environment and Garden, Antonio Navarro, visits the CEIP La Arboleda to collect the harvest of this season with children 46 schools with school gardens serve 7000 children's school, primary and secondary thanks to which they are part of the Network of Ecological School Gardens of the Municipality of Murcia

The Councilor for Urban Planning, Environment and Garden, Antonio Navarro Corchón, visited this morning the school garden of CEIP La Arboleda in Santiago and Zaraiche to participate in the collection of lettuce, chard and celery that the schoolchildren planted at the beginning of the course.

The second part of the work that has been done has been to prepare and pay the land occupied by the lettuce to plant potatoes that will be collected for the month of May approximately.

All the vegetables that they have collected have been distributed among all the schoolchildren who have participated in this task, receiving as a prize the vegetable that has been theirs.

In addition, they have collected stems and small branches of the aromatic plants that they have in the garden (rosemary, thyme, santolina, lavender, ...), to extract their oils and make small air fresheners.

The CEIP La Arboleda began its journey with the school garden last year from the financial support of the Neighborhood Board of Santiago and Zaraiche and the advice of the Network of School Ecological Gardens of the Municipality of Murcia (RHEMU) of the "Murcia, ecology of a city "of the Department of Environment of the City of Murcia, and since its inception have been very active doing all kinds of activities with all educational levels of the center.

Among others, they have created a specific blog for the school garden where you can see everything they have done so far: elhuertodelaarboleda.blogspot.com.es.

This activity is an example of some of those that have been carried out in the 46 educational centers that belong to the RHEMU, serving 7000 children's, primary and secondary school children.

A network increasingly demanded by the centers of the municipality of Murcia and this year will celebrate its tenth anniversary with a few days of exchange of experiences among all participating centers in the RHEMU to be held on March 1.

Navarro has declared that "The RHEMU continues betting on its management model offering schools an advisory service, help with the planning and implementation of the gardens, an annual prize, etc.

From the City Council we will support this work in which the youngest know first-hand our traditions huertanas, inculcating the values ​​of our garden ".
