Cardiopulmonary resuscitation conducted through Google Glass would save 22% more lives (05/01/2018)

A study of the UCAM, in which 72 professionals from the emergency and emergency services and 50 hospital doctors participated, demonstrates that the transfer of information via telematics between them improves the quality and time of the intervention.

The hospital centers have a multidisciplinary and highly specialized healthcare staff able to advise, in real time, the professionals of the emergency teams who often have to act in the face of cardiac arrest in situations of added stress due to external factors such as presence of relatives or third parties.

The study carried out by the research group "AECRESI" of the UCAM has sought to solve this problem by transferring skills and knowledge among healthcare professionals using Google Glass, which allows videoconferencing, so that it is possible to guide a performance and interact with great capacity of movements and leaving the hands free to the professional.

The essay, carried out at the San Antonio Catholic University of Murcia, within the doctoral thesis of Nuria Pérez, directed by Manuel Pardo and Joaquín Lasheras, has been carried out by comparing the results of a Control Group and another group equipped with the Google Glass who performed cardiopulmonary resuscitations by simulating real cases with SimMan 3G adult simulators.

The total sample of the groups was made up of 72 professionals from the Emergency and Emergency Management of the 061 in Murcia, the Mobile Emergency Units (UME) and the Emergency Service of Primary Care (SUAP), supervised during resuscitations by a sample of 50 doctors, with an experience of more than three years.

The research has concluded that the use of Google Glass improves the time of performing a correct Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation in 36.39 seconds, improving results with 78% of the Control Group compared to 100% of the Google Glass Group.
