The Department of Sports and Health is launching a campaign to promote the responsible adoption of pets during these holidays and remember that the Zoonoses Service has provided new houses to almost 10,000 dogs and 800 cats in the last 20 years.
Instead of buying pets as a gift this Christmas, the City of Murcia proposes to families who are thinking of taking home an animal that comes first through the Municipal Zoonoses Center, where they can find what they are looking for.
With this spirit, the Department of Sports and Health directed by Felipe Coello has launched the campaign "Adopt does not cost anything" through the edition of 10,000 calendars that will be distributed through municipal information offices, major and women's centers and other dependencies of the City Council.
"The goal of this initiative," explains Coello, "is to encourage the responsible adoption of pets during these holidays in which the gift of animals is very common."
The calendars that support the campaign reproduce images of dogs and cats, which are the most demanded pets, in which it is announced:
'Animal friendly and affectionate company, good presence.
I am looking for a family, for a stable relationship, that I can take care of.
I promise not to disappoint '
The Zoonoses service of the City of Murcia initiated the dog adoption program 20 years ago, in 1997. Since then, 9,843 dogs have found new families to live with, exceeding 500 adoptions for 13 consecutive years, with the only exception of 2013 although, paradoxically, in 2014 the record was registered with almost 700 deliveries.
As regards the cats, in the 11 years since the first adoptions were made in 2006, 828 specimens have found a new home and it was last year, with 97 felines, when the largest number was reached.
