The construction of the first phase of pedestrianization of Alfonso X Avenue will begin next January (22/12/2017)

The works of the first phase of pedestrianization of Alfonso X el Sabio Avenue, from Plaza Santo Domingo to Jaime I Avenue, will begin next January.

The Governing Board has approved this morning the award of the works that will be executed in three sequential times: west road (Santa Clara), east road (Santa Ana) and central walkway, allowing in this way that there are always two areas available for the pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

This project will allow the incorporation of more than 14,000 square meters of new pedestrian surface, providing linearity to the entire walk from Santo Domingo to the Plaza Circular.

The action will be carried out in two stages: Phase I, which is the one that has already been tendered, and which comprises from Santo Domingo to Jaime I (with an area of 7,600 m2), and Phase II (6,800 m2), from Jaime I to La Circular, which is currently in writing because it is contacting the neighbors to show their suggestions.

In this way, a huge pedestrian itinerary of about 50,000 square meters will be created in the historic center of the city from La Glorieta to the Plaza Circular, going through Plaza Belluga, Trapería, Santo Domingo and Alfonso X.

This initiative will allow Alfonso X Avenue a total pedestrianization of the space that restricts vehicular traffic to residents, public transportation (taxis), school zone and loading-unloading in regulated hours, circulating in a single direction to Santo Domingo by the west road , the existing one next to the church of Las Claras.

The current area of terraces will be reconfigured without increasing it and a new system of intelligent waste collection and adaptive LED lighting with low consumption will be implemented.

With all of this, the aim is to reduce noise and pollution in this area, providing greater neighborhood tranquility, while enabling new public spaces for stay and walk.

The project includes the enabling of a two-way bike lane that will run along the current west roadway.

Also, the current public bicycle rental system will be maintained in the vicinity of the new avenue.

Likewise, the existing trees will be maintained along the entire walk, more specimens will be planted (orange trees that will cover the entire west side and also palm trees) and shrub vegetation in flowerbeds as "orchards" on the east side, reaching triple the current vegetation and creating new spaces of natural shade.

The materials for the paving of the entire avenue will be based on stone in different formats and textures, a material of great strength and formal qualities.

The works will be developed by the UTE formed by Orthem Servicios y Actuaciones Ambientales and Construcciones Sangonera, with an investment of 1,881,195 euros, and within a period of eight months.
