The Contracting Committee proposes the awarding of the pedestrianization works of Alfonso X Avenue The amount of the award implies a reduction of 41% compared to the tender price (19/12/2017)

The Contracting Committee, chaired by the Councilor for Finance and Contracting, Eduardo Martínez-Oliva and attended by representatives of municipal political groups, has proposed the award of the pedestrianization works of the Gran Via Alfonso X el Sabio to the UTE composed by Orthem y Construcciones Sangonera SA.

The award amount amounts to 1,554,707 euros, which represents a reduction of 41% compared to the type of tender that exceeded 2,644,060 euros.

The work of the first phase of the pedestrianization project will last for ten months.

The works of this first phase, will be executed in three sequential times: west road (Santa Clara), east road (Santa Ana) and central walkway, allowing in this way that there are always two areas available for pedestrian and road traffic.

This project will allow the incorporation of more than 14,000 square meters of new pedestrian surface, providing linearity to the entire walk from Santo Domingo to the Plaza Circular.

The action will be carried out in two stages: Phase I, which is the one that has already been tendered, and which comprises from Santo Domingo to Jaime I (with an area of 7,600 m2), and Phase II (6,800 m2), from Jaime I to La Circular.

In this way, a huge pedestrian itinerary of about 50,000 square meters will be created in the historic center of the city from La Glorieta to the Plaza Circular, going through Plaza Belluga, Trapería, Santo Domingo and Alfonso X.

This initiative will allow Alfonso X Avenue a semi-total pedestrianization of the space that restricts vehicular traffic to residents, public transportation (taxis), school zone and loading-unloading in regulated hours, circulating in a single direction to Santo Domingo by the road west, the one next to the church of Las Claras.

The current area of terraces will be reconfigured without increasing it and a new system of intelligent waste collection and adaptive LED lighting with low consumption will be implemented.

With all of this, the aim is to reduce noise and pollution in this axis, providing greater neighborhood tranquility, while enabling new public spaces for stay and walk.

The project includes the enabling of a two-way bike lane that will run along the current west roadway.

Also, the current public bicycle rental system will be maintained in the vicinity of the new Avenue.

Likewise, the existing trees will be maintained along the entire walk, more specimens will be planted (orange trees that will cover the entire west side and also palm trees) and shrub vegetation in flowerbeds as "orchards" on the east side, reaching triple the current vegetation and creating new spaces of natural shade.

The materials for the paving of the entire avenue will be based on stone in different formats and textures, a material of great strength and formal qualities.
