UMU Senate approves the award of 5 honorary doctorates (14/12/2017)

The Cloister of the University of Murcia, which met on Thursday, in ordinary session, in the Auditorium, campus of La Merced, has heard the report of the rector, José Orihuela, and the Defender of the University, José Palazón, and has approved the proposal for the award of five honorary doctorates proposed by different departments and assumed by their respective faculties.

The claustrales have agreed to appoint honorary doctors to Murcia businessmen Tomás Fuertes Fernández and Patricio Valverde Espín and Robert Sackstein (of the Faculty of Medicine of Harvard University), Walter Schachermayer (Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Vienna) and María Antonia Blasco (director of the National Center for Oncological Research).

Regarding the Report presented by the University Ombudsman, it indicates that in the analyzed period, the one included between October 1, 2016 and September 30, 2017, 360 cases were recorded, a figure similar to that of the previous courses.

Of these, 151 were presented by men and 159 by women.

With regard to the issues raised by the students, Palazón has reported that most of the complaints and queries are motivated by the evaluation processes, breach of the rules of examinations or the evaluation criteria.

He also said that, for the first time, a case has been filed for harassment among students.

Most of the complaints presented by the teaching and research staff refer to evaluation processes, student behavior, hazing, lack of respect in the classroom and others.

The complaints of the administration and services personnel, in their majority, are related to the professional career and working conditions.

The report also states that "we continue to suffer the effects of legislative reforms, which have affected the right to access to university education as a result of the hardening of academic requirements to obtain scholarships, the reduction of their amounts or uncertainty about the amount to perceive and of the high increase of the public prices of matrícula, especially, of the second and later matrículas, and in degrees and masters ".

In his report, the rector, José Orihuela, has referred to the reasons that led him not to stand for re-election and that he advanced in the Governing Council held last November.

And he explained that he wants to return to teaching and research, which he considers could have been affected by continuing another four years at the head of the Rectorate, as well as that he has always thought that the renewal of the positions is good.

He has also said that he has always wanted to maintain a strong position in front of the Autonomous Community, to comment that his decision has been very thoughtful and made public at the time he thought he should.
