Antonio Tocornal Blanco from Cádiz wins the Vargas Llosa novel prize with a work about artistic life in the Paris of the late 80s (14/12/2017)

Caja Mediterráneo Foundation, UMU and the Vargas Llosa Chair of the Virtual Library Foundation call this prize endowed with 12,000 euros

Antonio Tocornal Blanco from Cádiz wins with his work "The night I could have seen Dizzy Gillespie playing" the XXII Edition of the Vargas Llosa Novel Prize, organized by the Caja Mediterráneo Foundation, the University of Murcia and the Vargas Llosa Chair of the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library Foundation.

Among the 200 originals presented to this edition, the jury has distinguished the work of Tocornal for its "ability to capture an environment starring a weave of grotesque but endearing characters, looked with a certain tone of humor and irony, but also of nostalgia , which turns the novel into a confessional narrative ".

The jury, which Francisco Florit presides, emphasizes that "the author has managed to offer with brio and very good prose a representation of the Paris of the late 80's of the last century and experimentalism in art, doing it in a caricatured way, but also printing sweetness in that rough world starred by failures ".

Upon winning the Vargas Llosa Novel Prize, Tocornal will receive a metallic prize of 12,000 euros and the printing of his work through a prestigious publisher.

The vice president of the Caja Mediterráneo Foundation, Clemente García, was in charge of communicating to Tocornal that the jury chose his work as the winner of 200 originals from authors from 14 countries that have submitted to this XXII edition.

Texts have come from Germany, Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, the United States, Spain, France, Israel, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela and, above all, Spain.

The majority of works are by writers based in Spain.

Authors of the 17 autonomous communities have presented novels.

With the notification of the jury's decision, the next call, number 23, of the Vargas Llosa novel prize is opened automatically.

The authors have until July 16, 2018 to submit their works.
