AEMPS and the University of Murcia launch the WASPSS pilot project in seven hospitals (12/12/2017)

This collaboration will be developed within the framework of the National Plan against Resistance to Antibiotics (PRAN) with the aim of evaluating the implementation of the WASPSS (Wise Antimicrobial Stewardship Program Support System) computer application in 7 hospital centers in 6 Autonomous Communities.

The WASPSS system facilitates the establishment of Programs for the Optimization of the Use of Antibiotics (PROA) in hospitals through solutions that integrate and communicate to the different operative levels, departments and physicians involved in these programs.

The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) and the University of Murcia (UM) have announced the signing of a service contract for the implementation of the pilot project to evaluate the WASPSS (Wise Antimicrobial Stewardship Program Support System) in 7 hospitals of 6 Autonomous Communities.

This project will be developed within the framework of the National Plan against Resistance to Antibiotics (PRAN) with the ultimate goal of facilitating the management of antibiotic treatments in the context of the Programs for the Optimization of the Use of Antibiotics (PROA) and facilitating the work of the PROA teams through a system of alerts to optimize the treatments.

During 2018, the WASPSS tool will be adapted and validated in the selected hospitals under the coordination of the PRAN team, the professor of the Faculty of Informatics of the UMU Manuel Campos Martínez and the Dr. Francisco Palacios Ortega, of the University Hospital of Getafe (Madrid ), center in which this tool works successfully since its implementation in 2015.

The experience of the Hospital de Getafe will now be transferred to 7 more centers: the University Clinic Hospital "Lozano Blesa" (Aragón);

H. Universitario Son Espases (Balearic Islands);

H. University of Burgos (Castilla y León);

H. del Mar (Catalonia);

H. Ramón y Cajal University (Madrid), H. University of Álava and H. Bidasoa (Basque Country).

The seven hospitals have been selected for participation in this pilot project by experts from the PRAN Working Group responsible for the measure in which this initiative is included.

Solutions for PROA

The Department of Computing and Systems of the UMU Computer Faculty has designed the WASPSS computer tool with the aim of achieving compatibility with the information systems of all hospitals.

The tool, which will allow the development of updated resistance maps, will answer simple questions from the prescriber that allow the grouping of sensitivity results by type of infection, age, hospital service, origin (nosocomial or community), etc.

Thus, WASPSS will allow the definition of agile response channels and an adequate system of alerts and filters that will promote the quality of data and a bidirectional flow of information.

The application will facilitate, therefore, the implementation of the PROA in different phases through the integration of the different operational levels, the different departments and the doctor.

Likewise, this tool will also allow the sustainable and efficient use of resources;

evaluation, measurement (instead of estimation), monitoring and information;

the clinical support necessary to help in making decisions;

the improvement of patient safety and the enhancement of activity and the impact of the Antibiotic Infection and Policy Commission and the PROA.

The WASPSS project was recognized during the Day of the European Day for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics held last November 17 at the Ministry of Health for its contribution to the prudent use of antibiotics in the framework of the national strategy.
