The majority of the Plenary Assembly takes forward a motion in defense of the Tajo-Segura Transfer and the 100,000 jobs that it generates (30/11/2017)

The Plenary of the City Council has approved, with the support of the Popular Party, PSOE and Citizens, support for the Levantine Water Manifesto, whose institutional support will also be requested from the Regional Government.

The agreement is a call for the Government of Spain to guarantee the durability of the Tajo-Segura Transfer, providing it with greater stability, and show its support to irrigators and Murcian farmers, mobilizing and making available all the water resources possible under the Decree of Drought and the Water Law.

In particular, the motion approved this morning proposes the exemption to the irrigators of the transfer of the payment of any tariff related to this while the zero transfer situation persists.

Likewise, the Plenary is demanding - without the support of Podemos or Cambio - the urgent, exceptional and temporary limited authorization for the transfer of water use rights among concessionaires from different basins and proposes that, with the utmost urgency, the existing desalination plants to the maximum possible production.

The problem of drought is not only of the irrigators, but of the 3 million people that form the Levantine society, being the deficit of resources recognized in the Basin Plan of almost 500 hm3.

The motion recalls that the Transfer Tajo-Segura 'is totally unrenounceable, for Murcia and Spain, as it has been for irrigators and for all Murcia, because this infrastructure brings solidarity and wealth to the whole of Spain', as it has an impact on Spanish GDP, estimated at more than 4,000 million euros, its capacity to generate more than 100,000 jobs and its impact on 200,000 hectares of irrigated land and more than 44 million fruit trees.
