The Murcians of the 21st century will be able to set foot on Murcia in the 12th century next spring (29/11/2017)

The proposal of the San Esteban Master Plan includes the creation of a large pedestrian space, the complete conservation of the archaeological remains and the creation of a protection cover for the site.

Phase 0 works will begin immediately and will allow the main streets of the road network and spaces such as the oratory, the maqbara and houses to be recovered before the summer.

A profound urban renovation that will generate a massive pedestrian space, the complete maintenance of the archaeological reserve and the creation of a protection cover for the site that will define the plaza.

These are the main keys collected in the initial proposal of the San Esteban Master Plan, which was studied yesterday and endorsed by the Committee of Experts and which today was presented by the Mayor José Ballesta, the Development Councilor, Roque Ortiz, the architect of the UTE San Esteban, Juan Carlos Cartagena and the municipal archaeologist Carmen Martínez.

Previously, and as agreed at the meeting of the Committee of Experts, Phase 0 will be carried out thanks to which next year the Murcia, expected next spring, will be able to walk through the Medieval Murcia that inhabits the site of San Esteban and discover the streets and houses that were built centuries ago.

The ambitious recovery plan of the site and the square begins with this Phase 0 whose actions are aimed at the beginning of the presentation of the suburb to visitors and their integration within the city, prior to the execution of the definitive protection coverage.

The aim is that the conditioning of the visitors' circulation zones, the original streets as axes of the movement and of the archaeological spaces as examples of the architecture and way of life of the medieval residents, allow a direct participation of the neighbors and visitors in knowledge, conservation and enjoyment of the site.

Phase 0 foresees two areas of action: on the road network of the site and on various selected architectural spaces.

Citizen visit to the deposit and soft lighting

It will begin with the adaptation of the streets that allow its distinction as a street map of the medieval urban fabric and, at the same time, facilitate the flow of visits and the multidisciplinary team.

It will also be necessary to install a soft lighting that allows its differentiation and notoriety at night.

The remains of these construction elements will be part of a temporary exhibition.

The project also includes certain individualized spaces that have been chosen, either because of their emblematic or significant nature, or because they are exemplary pieces of the characteristic domestic architecture of the suburb:

- Oratory, with the exception of the oratory of San Juan de Dios and the segmented remains of the Great Mosque, under the current Cathedral of Murcia, are the only fully preserved remains that can be found in the city of Murcia.

- Maqbara, burial space with a marked religious and tribal character.

Exhumation is planned as a sample of some of these burials for anthropological study.

- Enclosure I and II, residential spaces with a marked character to establish social differences and urban evolution in a medieval Andalusian city

- House 1, a medium-sized residential space that completes the bias of social differences and urban evolution in a medieval Andalusian city

- Shops, artisan spaces with a marked character of the daily life of an Andalusian city and the socioeconomic solutions that affect its inhabitants

- Houses 12, 14, 30 and 50, small-sized residential spaces

Interdisciplinary research work

The I-enclosures with an area of 465 m2 and II -whose extension is close to 380 m2- constitute well defined and individualized spaces and their advanced archaeological excavation allows to develop an interdisciplinary research work, of historical, archaeological, anthropological, conservation, botanical, faunistic, edaphological, ceramological, metallographic, mineralogical and on any other aspect susceptible to be investigated.

The University of Murcia will be responsible for carrying out this research work.

The interventions that will be carried out in these spaces include the review and diagnosis of the state of conservation of the remains, as well as the installation of a modular roof system for work and protection of a reversible nature, removable and easy to install and remove to avoid inclement weather meteorological

Archaeological and exhibition reserve

On the other hand, the initial proposal of the Master Plan establishes three areas of action: archaeological reserve -it is currently less excavated and will be preserved for future value-, exhibition reserve-archaeological remains that will not be exhumed to medium term but preserved - and the exhibition area - archaeological sites that are going to be excavated and put in value in the short term.

Coverage of protection of the deposit and new square

The new square that will emerge from the protection coverage of the site will allow the recovery of the San Esteban Garden.

In certain points, the structure will be raised to allow the visualization of the archaeological remains and will descend to the level below ground level in a slightly pronounced way by means of a stepped ramp, located in the northeast corner of the garden, generating an authentic connection between the garden and the deposit .

The urban plot will be improved by pedestrianizing the maximum number of streets or transforming them into shared roads, with the intention of creating a place where the pedestrian is the protagonist and, heritage, the main focus of attraction.

For the realization of this project has been taken as references the Plaza del Rey in Barcelona, the Plaza de la Encarnación in Seville, the Forum Museum of Caesaraugusta in the Plaza de La Seo in Zaragoza, the project 'The Underground Basin' and the Archaeological Museum of the Almoina in Valencia.

The next steps of the Master Plan will be to process and approve the Special Plan for the Asset of Cultural Interest, which will have to be publicly exposed, and the final approval of the Master Plan, scheduled for March.

Subsequently, the first phase of the project and coverage will be put out to tender.
