Now Murcia asks the municipality to recover the book fair, which disappeared in 2009 (28/11/2017)

- This 2017 have held the book fair most of the most important provincial capitals, and Murcia Now understand that a City Council that is proud to be the seventh in Spain in inhabitants should not allow in its cultural programming there is a fair from the book

- Two of the lines of action of a book fair are the promotion of reading and culture, and the promotion of local commerce and the authors and publishers of the Region

NOW MURCIA will propose at the next Plenary session that the City Council promote the recovery and launch of the book fair, which was held in Murcia for the last time in 2009, after 24 editions.

Book fairs, where they are held, represent one of the most significant cultural events of the year, with an important role in promoting reading and culture among citizens, and since the municipal formation shows conviction that his recovery in Murcia would be great news for the municipality.

Alicia Morales notes that "in Spain this 2017 have held the book fair most of the most important provincial capitals, and Murcia now understand that a City Council that is proud to be the seventh in Spain in inhabitants should not allow in its cultural programming there is no book fair. "

Specifically, this year they have enjoyed book fair cities like Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Bilbao, Malaga, Seville, Valladolid, Pamplona, Zaragoza or Cáceres, among others.

The councilor highlights that "one of the main objectives of the book fairs is the promotion of reading and culture among citizens, an objective that has even more importance in our region and in our municipality if we stick to the surveys , which place our Region among the autonomous communities with the lowest percentage of regular readers ".

To this important work of promotion of reading are added other aspects such as the revitalization of the publishing sector and bookseller, both local and regional;

the promotion of local and regional authors, together with figures of national relevance;

and the realization of parallel cultural and socio-educational activities.

The mayor stresses that the holding of an annual book fair promotes the small commerce of the municipality, helping to give visibility and relevance to bookstores and other businesses as part of the local trade plan.

For its part, the cultural and socio-educational parallel activities of the book fair would be aimed at children, youth and adults, including meetings with authors, book signings, presentations, workshops, film series, storytelling or puppets.

During the fair they could also promote cultural events in libraries, cultural centers and educational centers, to bring to them this 'book festival' and help generate a culture of books and reading.

The motion that Now Murcia will take to the Plenary on Thursday proposes that the City Council promote the recovery and implementation of the book fair, with a structured plan that integrates all the actors related to the book in all its formats, and that includes a program of cultural and socio-educational activities together with the commercial part (booths) that is the axis of the fair.
