Researchers from the UCAM and from five other countries implement an intervention program in the classroom against gender violence for secondary students (27/11/2017)

Ten researchers from the Faculties of Nursing and Education of the Catholic University of Murcia work on the European project 'Youth Life' to experiment in the classroom, teaching activities, learning, analysis and critical thinking about gender violence in young couples , based on a scientific methodology designed and validated by UCAM researchers.

According to the latest Barometer (2017) of ProyectoScopio prepared by the Queen Sofia Center on Adolescence and Youth, 1 in 4 (27.4%) young Spaniards consider these behaviors to be normal for couples.

Despite the fact that victims killed by sexist violence continue to grow every year, 1 in 5 (21.2%) Spaniards between 15 and 29 years old, considers gender violence a problem that is exaggerated, and 7% justifies it , arguing that it is an inevitable action that has always existed.

After three months of intervention in small groups, UCAM team formed by nurses, psychologists, doctors, social workers, sociologists and anthropologists, of the Faculties of Nursing and Education of this university, in addition to the managers David Heiser and Andrés Abad, The International Projects Office (OPRI), together with partners from the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Portugal, will work on the analysis and coordination with the project partners' studies to develop a manual of good practices that will reduce Violent behavior among young couples, which in Spain continue to increase every year.

The objective of this project co-financed by the European Union is to develop a profile of young students in the Region of Murcia (between 13 and 18 years old), and improve their perception of violence in adolescent couples.

In order to carry out the fieldwork, they have had the collaboration of Secondary Education students from the San Vicente de Paúl (Cartagena), La Inmaculada (Cartagena) and Colegio la Milagrosa (Murcia) centers.

Dr. Isabel Morales, coordinator of research from the UCAM, considers this research a priority due to the increase in gender violence at younger ages, so "it is necessary to work in a preventive manner from educational environments, as it will radiate its consequences in all areas of the future life of these young people. "

Next March, the teams of the different participating countries will begin to prepare the final project manual, and the closing event will be held in June at the UCAM.

Part of the research of the European project Life Youth follows from the doctoral thesis of Jesús Alberto Galdo, directed by doctors Paloma Echevarría, Isabel Morales and Carmen Martínez.
