Change Murcia criticizes the absence of effective measures by the City Council to mitigate the effects of pollution (24/11/2017)

Murcia change has criticized today, before the episodes of pollution in the municipality, the City has been limited to inform the implementation of a protocol based on generic recommendations to the population, "without specific measures that are focused on acting on the main cause of the episodes that, as recognized by the Consistory itself, is road traffic, beyond asking the Local Police to expedite traffic, something that is already part of their usual duties.

For municipal training, the "only alternative" proposed by the City Council in this situation is "wait for the time to change", that is, it does not offer effective pollution control measures despite the persistence in exceeding the thresholds of particulate pollutants known as PM10 or high levels of others such as ozone or nitrogen dioxide.

The air quality data provided by the San Basilio measuring station indicate that for more than a week they have equaled or exceeded 50 micrograms / cubic meter, despite the fact that "the council headed by Navarro Corchón still does not implement real measures aimed at reducing the effects of the pollution suffered by the city of Murcia and that is causing inconvenience to neighbors. "

The data provided by the Air Quality page of the General Directorate for the Natural Environment itself show that from the 16th the measuring station located in the San Basilio district is maintained at values equal to or higher than the limit of 50 mg / m3, with peaks that exceed 100.

"This fact becomes even more serious when we observe that the World Health Organization (SMS) lowered in 2013 the average daily limit to 20 micrograms / cubic meter of PM10 particles, the most polluting."

Murcia change considers "inadmissible" that being the city, for its orographic and urban conditions, an area prone to the repetition of air pollution phenomena, do not have a protocol that contemplates concrete and effective measures to deal with these situations through of protocols like the one that for example the city of Madrid has and that is being applied these days.

"Everything is simply left to goodwill in compliance with a series of generic indications that hardly anyone knows".

Since Cambiemos Murcia has been again requested to the City Council the implementation of a real air pollution control protocol that includes practical measures aimed at restricting road traffic as this is, in the opinion of the consistory itself, the main cause of this situation.
