"United children will never be defeated" (20/11/2017)

About 200 schoolchildren have participated today in the Children's Plenary of the City of Murcia on the occasion of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, approved by the UN on November 20, 1959. José Ballesta highlights "the responsibility" of the children and notes that "Murcia can be very calm with the next generations who will occupy tomorrow the positions of responsibility in our institutions. "

"United children will never be beaten", "we have a lot to say", "we are the future, but also the present", "we claim the right to express our dreams" are some of the reflections made by the approximately 200 schoolchildren of the municipality who participated today in the Children's Plenary of the City of Murcia, on the occasion of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child - approved by the General Assembly of the UN on November 20, 1959 - and the Convention on the Rights of Boys and Girls -approved on November 20, 1989-.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, who participated in the session with councilors of all groups of the municipal Corporation, highlighted "the enthusiasm, vitality and energy" of the schoolchildren and showed his conviction that "this city will be very well governed in the future, and these children have demonstrated their great responsibility and commitment today, so Murcia can be very calm with the following generations who will occupy the positions of responsibility in our institutions tomorrow. "

Four primary school students of Our Lady of Atocha of Murcia, Our Lady of the Rosary of Bacons Bridge, Our Lady of Consolation of Espinardo and Cipriano Galea of ​​La Ñora, who claimed "the right to children to participate and to give their opinion on public and family life and the need to believe in children's ideas, their originality and creativity ".

After their interventions, many other students took the floor in the Plenary and opened a question time to the members of the Municipal Corporation.

The issues focused especially on environmental issues: the circulation of motor vehicles, trees, the Segura River, the Mar Menor, etc.

"It is a generation very aware of the care and respect for its environment," said the mayor, who added that "they have also shown their concern for the situation of children in other countries of the world and the shortcomings they face."

In this regard, the head of Unicef ​​Murcia, Amparo Marzal, who also participated in the Children's Plenary, stressed that since "UNICEF we work worldwide to eliminate the gap between children who have less and those who are more" and recalled that, "Thanks to the involvement of the City Council in its fight against child poverty and respect for the rights of children, Murcia has been declared a Child Friendly City".

The children were also interested in how a mayor is elected, how long his term lasts, the history of the City of Murcia or what to do to become mayor, among other issues.
