Adif Alta Velocidad starts the first works for the undergrounding of the railway line in Murcia (15/11/2017)

The assembly of the screen machine that will build the underground concrete walls on both sides of the future tunnel has begun

Adif Alta Velocidad has begun today the first works for the undergrounding of the railway infrastructure in the city of Murcia with the assembly in the track space located in front of the building of the El Carmen station of a screen machine that will be responsible for the construction of the screens or concrete side walls of the future tunnel.

The beginning of these works represents a milestone in the fulfillment of the commitments announced by the Ministry of Development for the execution of the burial and the arrival of the High Speed Line to Murcia.

The excavation works of the first phase of the burial works have started in some land located on the beach tracks, in front of the building of the station of El Carmen, called zone 1, where you can tackle 405 m in length of walls , which means 8,000 m2 of concrete side screens.

In this sector, the excavation and construction of 115 m of reinforced concrete underground walls is initially planned, for which in recent days the section 6, 8 and 10 roads have been dismantled on their Alicante / Cartagena side.

Subsequently, another 290 m will be executed in contiguous zones, for which it will be necessary to also cancel route 4.

In the coming days, the guiding walls, the implementation of equipment, screens, assembly of bentonite sludge treatment plants and the development of the first steel reinforcement modules for the side walls will be made.

The technical procedure adopted assumes the scheduled development of the following works:

As a first step, we proceed to the assembly of a large-tonnage (70 Tn) screen machine that moves by caterpillars.

It is equipped with a bivalve grab that vertically excavates the ground for its subsequent filling of concrete and steel reinforcements.

At the time of the excavation, the hole is filled with bentonite sludge - a fluid with a lower density than concrete, which maintains the pressure on the earth walls - until concreting is carried out.

The walls of concrete and steel reinforcement will be 20 m deep and 1 m thick, divided into modules of 5 m horizontal length called batches, which make up the final wall of the underground.

Previously, guiding walls must be made to maintain the verticality and alignment of the excavation.

Once the concrete walls buried on both sides (north and south) are built, the concrete covering slab is made, which serves as shoring and under which the excavation of the lands is carried out.

Subsequently, the machinery will move to zones 4 and 5 (see diagram), in which it is expected to increase the number of equipment, maintaining the construction procedure.

For this it will be necessary to cancel route 2 of access to Murcia in the capital of Alicante.

To finish all the side walls, especially the one on the north side of the underground, it will be essential that the provisional railway deviation has been put into service, since it is necessary to cancel routes 1 and 2.

Adif Alta Velocidad has planned the execution of these works with the aim of minimizing the affections and keeping railway traffic operational at all times.

In addition, the construction of the access ramp to the tunnel for the use of sections already underground is envisaged in order to allow the dismantling of the provisional railway bypass as soon as possible and without the need to complete all the different phases of the burial.
