The works prior to the pedestrianization of the Avenida Alfonso X el Sabio begin (13/11/2017)

This morning, work began on the first phase of the pedestrianization project on Alfonso X el Sabio Avenue, consisting of renewing the networks of the different service supply companies.

Thus, Aguas de Murcia has begun the renewal of supply networks as the current ones have a high degree of obsolescence and deterioration, achieving with the projected works the necessary infrastructure for an improvement in the supply of drinking water of the homes located in the zone.

For its part, Redexis will work on the interconnection of two existing networks, one of them at the corner of Santa Clara street with Echegaray street and the other at Alfonso X, next to Las Claras.

The objective of this work is to mesh the networks in the area, which guarantees a better service to all users, especially in the event of a breakdown.

Finally, Iberdrola will introduce a new network from the vicinity of Las Claras to Alfonso X before Plaza Captesa.

The objective of this work is to improve the service offered.

Both Redexis and Iberdrola's works will last approximately one week.

The councilor for Development, Roque Ortiz, explained that "during the course of the works will try to interfere at least in the normal development of the activity of the avenue and that the traffic cuts are as small as possible."

In addition, "the company that is executing the works will inform the neighbors on a daily basis of the progress and needs of the work," said the councilor.

These works will be developed during approximately two months so that, immediately, the winning company starts working on the first phase of the pedestrianization project of Alfonso X el Sabio avenues that will last for ten months.

The works of this first phase, will be executed in three sequential times: west road (Santa Clara), east road (Santa Ana) and central walkway, allowing in this way that there are always two areas available for pedestrian and road traffic.

This project will allow the incorporation of more than 14,000 square meters of new pedestrian surface, providing linearity to the entire walk from Santo Domingo to the Plaza Circular.

The action will be carried out in two stages: Phase I, which is the one that has already been tendered, and which comprises from Santo Domingo to Jaime I (with an area of 7,600 m2), and Phase II (6,800 m2), from Jaime I to La Circular.

Participation has been the axis that has articulated the design process of the project, integrating the proposals and allegations of the different neighborhood and associative groups, and agreeing with the technical observations of the Official College of Architects of the Region and the General Directorate of Cultural Assets .

In this way, a huge pedestrian itinerary of about 50,000 square meters will be created in the historic center of the city from La Glorieta to the Plaza Circular, going through Plaza Belluga, Trapería, Santo Domingo and Alfonso X.

This initiative will allow Alfonso X Avenue a semi-total pedestrianization of the space that restricts vehicular traffic to residents, public transportation (taxis), school zone and loading-unloading in regulated hours, circulating in a single direction to Santo Domingo by the road west, the one next to the church of Las Claras.

The current area of terraces will be reconfigured without increasing it and a new system of intelligent waste collection and adaptive LED lighting with low consumption will be implemented.

With all of this, the aim is to reduce noise and pollution in this area, providing greater neighborhood tranquility, while enabling new public spaces for stay and walk.

The project includes the enabling of a two-way bike lane that will run along the current west roadway.

Also, the current public bicycle rental system will be maintained in the vicinity of the new Avenue.

Likewise, the existing trees will be maintained along the entire walk, more specimens will be planted (orange trees that will cover the entire west side and also palm trees) and shrub vegetation in flowerbeds as "orchards" on the east side, reaching triple the current vegetation and creating new spaces of natural shade.

The materials for the paving of the entire avenue will be based on stone in different formats and textures, a material of great strength and formal qualities.
