Losing the fear of transgenics, the goal of Mulet in the UMU (10/11/2017)

Next Monday, November 13, the researcher and disseminator JMMulet will give the conference 'Transgenics: from myth to success' which will deal with one of the most controversial scientific issues at present: the genetic manipulation of food.

The talk will take place at 12:15 p.m. in the Hermenegildo Lumeras de Castro Assembly Hall at the Faculty of Chemistry of the UMU, on the occasion of the Week of St. Albert, patron of the Faculty, in which numerous commemorative activities will be held.

With this conference he will try to deny the possible taboos explained in his latest book Transgenics without fear.

It discusses the controversy that may exist about those foods that include in its composition some ingredient from genetic modifications of other species.

These innovations are used as a scientific advance to ensure that transgenic plants can resist pests or overcome droughts.

In 2015, 94% of US soybean plantations were produced using transgenic varieties, but in Europe the norms are still not very receptive.

This professor of the Department of Biotechnology of the Polytechnic University of Valencia is recognized for his research on the mechanisms of responses in plants, especially the cold and drought, as well as being one of the most relevant disseminators in the country.

In fact, he frequently participates in media such as El País Semanal or Cadena Ser, among others.

Also, Mulet has one of the most relevant scientific blogs in the national field: Tomatoes with genes.

Its divulging activity is focused on the application of transgenics in agriculture and daily life.

From the science it tries to demystify the bad perceptions that, in many occasions, the general public possesses about the transgenics.

In the field of dissemination, he has published numerous books since 2011, the last one precisely on the topic to be discussed at this conference, where the debate will be held on whether the strategies used by the environmental movements against these foods are based on will explain what are the advantages of its consumption.

"It is fortunate that we have it to impart, from a strictly scientific point of view, the subject of transgenic products", comments Antonio Donaire, Vice-Dean of the degree of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry of the UMU.
