HUERMUR demands that the garden and farmers not be left without water (08/11/2017)

Huermur has requested by registration to the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura that the reduction of flow rates proposed for the acequias of the huerta de Murcia is not carried out.

The association warns of the environmental damage that will generate the lack of water to the traditional irrigation network of the garden of Murcia and the natural ecosystem that depends on the ditches.

Huermur has asked the CHS the technical and legal reports that support the decision taken by the Governing Council of the basin organization, as well as the studies that assess the environmental impact, and the repercussions to the agricultural and economic sector.

The Association for the Conservation of the Garden and the Heritage of Murcia (HUERMUR) has requested this Tuesday for registration to the Segura Hydrographic Confederation, which does not carry out the reduction of flows proposed by the Governing Council of the CHS for the irrigation ditches of the huerta of Murcia.

From Huermur point out that the flow that circulates through the irrigation ditches of the garden for irrigation is already scarce, so its reduction by 39.9% would mean not maintaining even a minimum ecological flow that runs through the channels of the network of traditional irrigation of the garden, and that provides sufficient guarantees for the preservation of the environmental values of the channels.

The conservationist group warns that when the water restrictions indicated for the traditional irrigation network of the Huerta de Murcia are applied, it could cause damage to the flora and fauna of the irrigation ditches of the orchard, including numerous species protected by legislation, which they depend exclusively on the flows that are derived from the Azud de la Contraparada in Murcia.

In the same sense, there are many scientific studies that endorse the great environmental values of the traditional irrigation network of the orchard, as well as the need for water that flows through its channels to maintain the natural ecosystem and the life of flora and fauna that they lodge.

Huermur has indicated to the CHS in the submitted document that water regulations establish as a second priority use of water, the one destined for irrigation and agricultural uses.

In this way, it is not understood that if water has to be saved, the decision should be made that this saving be at the expense of agricultural use, and not of other uses that are at a lower level of priority in the law. , such as industrial uses for electricity production, other industrial uses, aquaculture or recreational uses, such as golf courses that abound in the Region.

Huermur has also asked the Confederation to adapt to the need for an ecological flow in the irrigation ditches, as shown by the water regulations, to avoid environmental deterioration and the risk to the survival of the flora and fauna of the channels.

For Huermur, and as well as many irrigators and producers have indicated, this reduction in the flow rates for the acequias and azarbes of the orchard will seriously jeopardize the viability of the seasonal harvests, which are still awaiting collection today. and depend entirely on the irrigations coming from the acequias.

This situation may have a negative impact on the local economy and even on a large part of the regional economy, if crops are damaged due to the lack of water in Murcia's orchard.

Finally, Huermur has requested the technical and legal reports that support the decision taken by the Governing Council of the CHS, to carry out the reduction of flows in the acequias.

It has also demanded studies that assess the environmental impact, and the repercussions to the agricultural and economic sector that this decision may have.

In the same way Huermur has requested to be present in all the files of the CHS in this regard.
