The Ministry of the Environment grants the Road Cleaning and Waste Management Service the Carbon Footprint registration certificate for its work against climate change (01/11/2017)

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Environment has granted the Public Services of Road Cleaning and Waste Management of the municipality of Murcia, dependent on the Department of Development, which directs Roque Ortiz, inclusion in the Carbon Footprint Registry for its work against climate change.

The awarding of this seal reinforces the sustainability objectives set by the City Council in the commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and greater energy efficiency, combining joint work in favor of environmental improvement.

The calculation of the carbon footprint describes the total amount of CO2 emissions and other greenhouse gases that are caused directly or indirectly by an individual, an organization, an event or a product throughout its life cycle.

Today, it is essential to measure and know this footprint, to check and improve year after year the actions that are carried out, always in line with environmental respect while improving the quality of life of citizens.

This voluntary registration was born with the vocation to promote the calculation and reduction of the carbon footprint, as well as to promote projects that improve the sink capacity of Murcia, thus constituting a measure to combat climate change.

The joint work of the City of Murcia with Ferrovial Services has been and is essential to achieve the transformation towards a low carbon society.

In pursuit of these objectives, new vehicles for road cleaning and waste management services have been incorporated into the new fleet, taking into account these environmental criteria, which are more efficient and respectful of the environment, such as 9 side-loading collectors powered by gas, 1 electric sweeper , 4 Electric Scrubber, 2 Electric Clean Point, 1 Electric Vacuum, 13 electric transport vehicles and 20 mixed inspection vehicles.

On the other hand, the Waste Treatment Center of Cañada Hermosa, a facility that receives daily the waste generated by the citizens of the municipality of Murcia, bet since its inception for this sustainability challenge.

This is demonstrated by the biogas plant, which receives the methane produced in the anaerobic decomposition of the rejects deposited in the controlled landfill, avoiding its emissions to the atmosphere in the first place, and secondly valorizing this gas converted into energy, supplying not only the complete treatment center but also to the city, through its integration in the electricity network.

Within this treatment center, there is the Biomethanization Plant for waste from the agri-food sector, whose biogas production is also valued in several additional processes.

The stamp awarded reflects the degree of effort with a reduction of 3.96% of the average emission intensity in the 2014-2016 triennium with respect to the 2013-2015 triennium.
