The Urban Tree Working Group seeks to reach consensus with the municipal political groups on the valorisation of the more than 100,000 trees in the municipality (30/10/2017)

The Councilor for the Modernization of Administration, Urban Quality and Participation, José Guillén, today chaired the first meeting of the Working Group on urban trees in which representatives of all municipal political groups have participated.

The purpose of this council is "like the rest of the relevant matters of the municipality, to open to dialogue and the participation of all political groups everything related to our arboreal heritage in order to make joint decisions for the continuous improvement of our horses", has indicated the councilor who added that "this group, will open even to the participation of citizens and experts and groups that can offer their interdisciplinary vision."

The councilor explained that in 2016 there were 225,667 forest revision and pruning actions, while in the first half of 2017 there were 140,899.

Throughout the municipality of Murcia there are more than 100,000 trees and more than 15,000 palm trees, which are managed daily to fulfill their ornamental and landscape function within the city and inspected and meticulously supervised by the technicians.

In 2016, close to 1,000 new trees were planted in the municipality, while in the first half of this year this figure rises to 592.

The councilor explained that "throughout the year reviews are carried out on all the trees of the municipality to assess the need for pruning of these, including reforesting, pruning height and pruning that are necessary for safety, of orange trees, mulberry trees and rest of trees. "

Also throughout the year we proceed to the work of fumigation against pests and diseases, a fundamental task of maintenance of the trees of the city.

Thus, a program of phytosanitary treatments has been developed which has taken into account, in addition to the type of plague or disease more frequent in the trees of the city, preventive methods, means of detection, assessment and monitoring of the phytosanitary state of vegetation, as well as the products used to combat pests and diseases.

In 2016, 92,114 phytosanitary treatments were carried out against the red palm weevil, the aphid and the processionary and in the first six months of this year 70,742.

During the meeting has also reported on the recovery of the ficus of the Plaza de Santo Domingo, explaining that after the first safety actions were conducted a series of tests aimed at finding out the real state of ficus, to act short and medium term on it and improve its status and vigor.

Among these tests, a resistography and a sonic tomography were performed, which together with the innumerable visual inspections have helped to determine which state the ficus is in and what actions may be necessary in it.

After the analysis of the current state of the tree, the ficus is expected to evolve positively from a physiological point of view, since the recovery can be positive since it is a species with great capacity for reaction, number of latent shoots (which appeared in the first moment) and that responds very well to pruning.

The technicians have determined that the tree should be monitored permanently and its development directed as it biomechanically has damage, prioritizing above all citizen security.
