Murcia will join the Network of Cities for Agroecology after approving the motion of Now Murcia (27/10/2017)

- Among the cities that are already part of the network are Madrid, Valencia, Las Palmas, La Coruña or Palma de Mallorca, with which will share experiences, knowledge, information and projects

- Among the measures are the preservation of fertile soil and the implementation of figures and processes that facilitate access to land to productive initiatives oriented to ecological agriculture and livestock, especially young people and women

The municipality of Murcia will join the Network of Cities for Agroecology after approving in yesterday's plenary the motion of Now Murcia that proposed this accession.

The mayor Angeles Micol emphasizes the importance of the municipality to take advantage of its special characteristics, "since it has a field and an orchard" and "to maximize its environmental, social and economic functions."

The Councilor explains that it is a "platform for virtual exchange and face-to-face of experiences, knowledge, information and projects around the agro-food systems of the participating cities", among which are Madrid, Valencia, Las Palmas, La Coruña or Palma of Mallorca, among others.

Angeles Micol points out that participation in this network will affect the Department of Urbanism, Huerta and Environment and Fomento, and emphasizes that in addition "here may have fit some of the initiatives that the different municipal groups have been proposing in plenary" .

The signatory cities undertake to implement action plans through concrete and specific measures, to develop adequate tools to monitor and evaluate their compliance, and to build an ideology that gives cohesion and future projection to these plans.

Thus, as Micol points out, the network aims to "achieve recognition of peri-urban agriculture and city-countryside relations, as well as the professional, ecological and social activity of farmers."

Another fundamental objective is "the preservation of fertile soil and good agronomic practices, to restore the productive capacity of urban and peri-urban environments by putting in place figures and processes that facilitate access to land to productive initiatives oriented to agriculture and livestock especially young people and women. "

It is also sought, the councilor, "local marketing to promote organic farming and proximity, based on short circuits," along with other issues such as social awareness on these issues.

"Without a doubt it can be very profitable to share experiences and knowledge with other cities that have similar characteristics to ours", emphasizes the mayor, "improving the plans and projects that are already underway in our City Hall and promoting new ones."
