Murcia leads the fight against diabetes with a pioneering program in Spain that combines technology and genetics (18/10/2017)

The City Council and the UMU are united in a pilot project for the early identification of people at risk of type 2 diabetes, one of the biggest epidemics of the 21st century.

Murcia surpasses the average of Spain in patients diagnosed with diabetes type 2, reaching 8.5% against 7% national.

Murcia leads the fight against one of the major epidemics of the 21st century, type 2 diabetes, with the launch of the innovative 'Murcia Diabetes Prevent' pilot program, which includes an integral system of genomic medicine and the improvement of living habits with a mobile monitoring and tracking application.

The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, presented today this pioneering project in Spain with Gaspar Ros, dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the UMU - an entity with which the City Council has signed an agreement for the joint development of the project - and Jaime Razkin, director of Marketing and Operations at Patia, the company that develops this new clinical-technological system.

Murcia surpasses the average of Spain in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, reaching 8.5% against 7% national, in the population over 15 years.

One third of children in Murcia are overweight and 60% of adults are obese or overweight.

The best prevention is a lifestyle change that includes a healthy diet and physical activity.

For this reason, the City of Murcia, through the Health Service - recognized nationally for its interventions to prevent diabetes or obesity - has driven this pilot project in which goes hand in hand with the University of Murcia, which will provide scientific support through the Nutrition and Bromatology Research Group of the UMU.

José Ballesta said that "Murcia is the first city in Spain to incorporate new technologies and genetic study to combat diabetes, in a public initiative of prevention and intervention, which allows the early identification of people at risk of suffering both this disease like obesity. "

Genetic test that analyzes 16 variables and a control App

The pilot project to be developed in Murcia will be applied in a sample of 100 people (50 children and 50 adults).

The test, developed by the digital genomics company Patia, consists of the application of a genetic test of type 2 diabetes that identifies the polymorphisms that predispose to suffer the disease, simultaneously analyzing the 16 genetic variants with the highest predictive value.

The program 'Murcia Diabetes Prevent' is completed with a mobile application with digital pedometer that monitors the information of each subject, tracks and provides motivation for the development of personalized diets and physical exercise tables.

Diabetes is a disease with serious health implications.

It is the most common cause of adult blindness, amputation and renal failure.

In addition, it has important an important economic reach, since the health expenditure of a diabetic patient almost doubles that of a person who does not suffer from this pathology.
