The Social Rights Department launches the Volunteer Project of the Elderly Centers (03/10/2017)

The Councilor for Social Rights, Conchita Ruiz, held a meeting this morning with representatives of all major centers in the municipality of Murcia on the occasion of the celebration of the Mayor's Day, which took place last Sunday.

It is recalled that on 1 October was designated by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1990 as International Day of Older Persons, serving this date to raise awareness of the situation of a growing part of the world population in aspects such as

- The opportunities of aging

- The rights of the Elderly

- The promotion of a society for all

- Sustainability and the inclusion of older people in the urban environment

- Discrimination against the Elderly

For this reason, the Council of Social Rights has wanted to join this celebration with this meeting held to take stock of the actions, services and activities that aim to recognize the work of the Elderly in the construction of today's society, real and positive image of aging, boost participation and partnership or promote active and healthy aging.

During the meeting has reported the start of the procedure for the formal adherence of the City of Murcia to the global network of cities and communities that are friendly to older people, has reported the day of road safety "Older people and road safety" , to be held on October 10 at the Cultural Hall of Cajamar or the work of the Reading Clubs has been recognized, a project that received a few days ago praises at the IV Ministerial Conference on the aging of Lisbon.

But above all this is the presentation of the volunteer campaign of the Social Centers of greater of the municipality of Murcia, "Become a Volunteer".

The Social Centers for the Elderly are associations of volunteers;

where voluntary actions have been developed, with a more or less informal character and diversity of contents.

Some interesting examples we have in actions such as accompaniment, support in the negotiations, realization of hiking routes, outings to the theater, groups of meeting and meeting, review of English, and especially reading clubs, fruit of the motivation of a collective that feels active, committed and supportive.

The "Volunteer Project" responds to the social demand and the explicit demand of some Social Centers for the Elderly and intends to offer, from the broad framework of organization of the Council of Social Rights, the technical support and the necessary means for the development of actions of volunteering, aimed at senior citizens of the municipality of Murcia, but open to other groups and entities in the environment and above all counting on the elders, as the main promoters and beneficiaries.

The main objective of this project is to promote solidarity and social participation of the Elderly, reinforcing the actions currently being carried out or promoting new ones.

The project, started in February of this year, through the dissemination of it to the Social Centers of Elders of the municipality of Murcia, from now on, any initiative that the centers want to launch, is collected and channeled by the Seniors Section.

In this way, we seek to involve the associations of the Social Centers for Older People, volunteers and the City of Murcia to carry out accompaniment activities (daily, medical, purchase, ...), social, educational and cultural activities (training sessions, workshops , meetings, meetings ...), environmental activities (guided tours, excursions, outings, training activities, talks, ...), or healthy activities (training and information activities such as talks, screenings, trekking, ... ).

One of the best examples of the implementation of this project are guided tours to Los Molinos del Río Segura.

To make known the old flour mills of the Hydraulic Museum to the partners and members of the Social Centers of the Elderly of the Municipality of Murcia, as well as to promote the recovery of the historical, cultural and ethnographic memory around the Mills of the river Segura are the objectives .

All this with the explanations of the CSM volunteer Santiago el Mayor, Pablo Crespo, last worker of this emblematic point of the municipality and that is put at the disposal of the Department to transmit its knowledge.
