The City Council of Murcia, through the Council of Social Rights, was present at the last Ministerial Conference on the aging of Lisbon, held on 21 and 22 September, thanks to the presentation of an explanatory poster on the Reading Clubs of the municipality .

A work recognized as an example of good practice within the framework of the 10 objectives of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Aging and its Regional Implementation Strategy.

A project which in 2018 will be twenty years old and made known to the responsible ministers of the 56 Member States of the UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) as well as relevant institutions such as the United Nations, the Commission And the World Labor Organization.

The Reading Clubs project has been developed in the Social Centers of the Elderly in the Municipality of Murcia since 1998 through a collaboration agreement between the City of Murcia, the University of Murcia and the Regional Library dependent on the Ministry of Culture.

The number of Senior Centers existing in our municipality is 76, of which 16 currently have a Reading Club, with a progressive increase in the number of them since the beginning of the project.

These Centers have as essential objective the integral development of the elderly, favoring the participative integration of the same in their surroundings.

The objectives of the activity are:

- Promote the habit of reading among the elderly population as a way to maintain and increase active aging.

- Promote dialogue and group communication around reading and other related activities.

- Enabling cultural and formative activities in the Elderly Centers.

- Creation of groups of older people that favor the support and mutual relationship around a formative and cultural activity such as reading.

Reading Clubs usually meet one day a week or fortnightly, for an hour or an hour and a half, around the reading and commentary of a book, previously selected, from which the Regional Library provides a copy for each member of the Library. Club;

book that also can take to their houses, for a more personal and restful reading.

In each Club two volunteers, who act as coordinators and animators of the Reading Club, and a group of between ten and fifteen or more seniors, partners of the center participate.

Volunteers belong to two senior volunteer associations, usually related to teaching;

although in some Reading Clubs volunteers are partners or members of the Elderly Centers themselves.

It is worth noting the high percentage of women who participate in the Clubs, which is about 75%.

The 16 Social Centers of Seniors of the municipality of Murcia are located in the following districts and districts:
