The UMU joins the World Tourism Day from Caravaca de la Cruz (29/09/2017)

On the occasion of World Tourism Day, which took place on September 27, a round table was held in the Church of San José de Caravaca de la Cruz under the name 'Heritage, Tourism and Local Development'.

In it participated the professors of the Department of Geography of the University of Murcia Cayetano Espejo Marín and Ramón García Marín, as well as the researchers of the same institution Daniel Moreno Muñoz and Javier Martí Talavera.

During this event, issues related to tourism in Caravaca de la Cruz and the Region of Murcia were discussed, especially linked to the rich and varied material and immaterial cultural heritage.

Moreno and Martí presented the results of their research on the Wine Horses, a festival to obtain the distinction of Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

The recent opening of the Museum of Wine Horses, where material goods such as harnessing are displayed, has favored the dissemination of an identity and patrimonial resource throughout the year for visitors.

In addition, they highlighted the work of local and regional institutions to promote the festival by obtaining a global protection figure.

Professor García Marín treated the tourism viability of the heritage, since the relationship between tourism and heritage remains, after decades of analysis and studies, complex.

As I explain to the attendees, there is currently no heritage project that does not base to a greater or lesser extent its sustainability in tourism, while new passenger cars seek in heritage the basic resources on which to articulate their products.

He also recalled the need to generate a series of synergies with the nearby municipalities, and the Lorca-Caravaca de la Cruz connection.

For his part, Professor Espejo Marín showed the great potential of tourism development in Caravaca de la Cruz, thanks to its status as a holy city of Christianity and the celebration of the jubilee in perpetuum, a distinction that only falls in four other cities of the world.

This fact has promoted the promotion and commercialization of the "Caravaca Jubilar" tourism product with the objective of opening new markets and increasing visits through presence in circuits of specialized operators.

In addition, it has motivated the campaign of diffusion and international positioning of the Jubilee Year of Caravaca 2017 and the Way of the Cross, signaling the so-called Camino del Levante.

As Espejo Marín explains, the actions are undertaken to attract the regional public, national and international destinations such as Italy, Poland, United Kingdom and Germany.

Nevertheless, he concluded by stating that challenges such as the creation of hotel infrastructures and the promotion of tourism in interjubillary years should still be faced, since the consolidation of the tourism product is what will mark its position in the markets.
