Mireia Belmonte: "I still have room at home for more medals" (27/09/2017)

Once the gold medal in the Olympic Games, World Championship and European Championship can be difficult to find the motivation to continue conquering sport successes.

But it is not the case of Mireia Belmonte, who is already prepared to face another season with new goals and a warning: "I still have room at home for more medals."

Before starting a new international tour of competitions, the swimmer has taken advantage to complete an intense academic day at UCAM: "I do not have much time to be in person at the university but whenever I come I take advantage of the day to the maximum and I can do that thanks to UCAM.Today he had it with exams, practices and tutorials. Here we work very well so that the athletes can combine the studies with all the training and the competition.

On the purely sporting pitch, Mireia is more than satisfied with everything she achieved this summer: "The goal of 2017 is fulfilled with gold in 200 butterfly, which was the medal I lacked internationally in a pool of 50. Now come new challenges and I want to start the new season in the best possible way with the World Cup event in Japan and possibly also in Singapore. "

And it adds a new objective that motivates it for the next months: "To obtain a record of Europe in pool of 50 in the 200 butterfly".

On a daily basis, the Olympic champion and her coach, Fred Vergnoux, are looking for new challenges and different ways of working to eliminate a routine that can put an end to motivation: "We look for variations in training. body do not get used to always doing the same ".

An example for young people

José Luis Mendoza, president of the UCAM, stressed the importance of the figure of Mireia Belmonte as an example for everyone that can compete at the highest level and continue studying: "Not only achieves sports success, is also very involved in the study because she wants to have a career. "It is a great sacrifice for a sportswoman of her stature to obtain a university degree as she trains many hours a day, she is giving a very important testimony as an athlete and as a person."
