Fundown will raise its Active Aging Center in a central space of 4,200 m2 provided by the City (23/08/2017)

It will be located between Juan de Borbón and Juan Carlos I and will have capacity for 80 people in permanent housing regime plus another 120 that will receive autonomy promotion services.

Murcia will have the first Center for Active Aging for people with intellectual disabilities thanks to the initiative of the Foundation Down Syndrome of the Region of Murcia (Fundown), which will develop this building in a solar center of 4,200 square meters located between Juan Of Bourbon and Juan Carlos I, that has been yielded gratuitously by the City council of Murcia.

The center will be built on a plot of 4,200 square meters with a buildable area of ​​around 8,200 square meters, located on Avenida de Infantería, with easy access to public transport and close to the city center for more comfort at the time Of the mobility of the users.

The project involves the construction of a total of 40 homes (20 in a first phase) fully equipped and with all gerontological needs.

In each house a mediator and two users may reside.

The facilities will have a large library, computer room, four classrooms for the realization of workshops and occupational therapy, a gym, multipurpose room, offices, work area, meeting area, rest area, a patio or outdoor enclosure.

Active aging and increased life expectancy

The need to remain active in old age affects everyone and, of course, the group of people with intellectual disabilities, which has also seen an increase in their life expectancy, thanks to the improvement in the overall care that has been Decades.

Improvement of the quality of life

The new center will allow an early detection of cognitive impairment caused by the beginning of an early aging process, as well as the planning and execution of actions aimed at preventing and promoting personal, psychological and social autonomy.

"The philosophy that has guided Fundown when it comes to this project is respect for the dignity of the person as an essential and inalienable right that, in addition, contributes to building a more just and egalitarian society," said the mayor.

Beneficiaries and professionals

The estimates of the occupation of the Fundown Center are currently about 28 users ranging from 29 to 55 years old and either are in cognitive impairment or are older people with Down syndrome or intellectual disability who Begin to manifest difficulties.

The Center's team of professionals will be comprised of support and training technicians, psychologists, pedagogues, social workers, employment technicians, labor preparers, care staff, occupational therapists and physiotherapists.

The Management will be in charge of the management and supervision of the center, which will also include administrative staff, Area Coordinators of the Foundation and a technical director, responsible for the supervision of the project.

For full inclusion

Fundown has been working for more than 20 years to ensure the personal and work autonomy of people with intellectual capacity and / or Down syndrome.

Among the main objectives of the Foundation is the social and work integration of young people and adults with Down syndrome.

The City of Murcia also collaborates with Fundown through the 'School of Trades' program of Ferrovial Services, which favors the employment insertion of people with disabilities, through the provision of regulated training and practices in municipal facilities.
