The Senate asks the City of Murcia the files of the pro-Franco streets to apply the Law of Historical Memory (23/08/2017)

Councilor of Cambiemos Murcia Nacho Tornel has asked the Mayor, José Ballesta, to convene the working group on Historical Memory in order to prepare the open files and minutes of plenary sessions in which it has been agreed to change the name of the roads with Denomination Franco, after the Senate has requested this documentation to the City council.

In particular, the Upper House has claimed the files of the existing streets in Murcia with the name of Jose Antonio, General Moscardó, General Sanjurjo, General Mola and Francisco Franco, as well as General Sanjurjo square.

This petition, which has been sent to other municipalities in the country, is based on the fact that the municipality still has a symbology and nomenclature of Franco, which violates Law 52/2007, of December 26, which recognizes and extends the Rights and measures are established in favor of those who suffered persecution or violence during the Civil War.

Tornel has considered that the Consistory must act quickly and convene the working group, which has not met since last May 3.

At that meeting, the PP showed "a lack of involvement" in moving towards a real change that complies with the rules on historical memory.

"We do not understand this reluctance and the obstacles that are put when it comes to carrying out the work of this group," said the mayor of the municipalist formation.
