Navarro stresses that Murcia has advanced its compliance in the fight against climate change for five years (08/08/2017)

The Councilor for Urban Planning, Environment and Huerta asks the PSOE not to alarm and, instead, adds to the goal of further improving the environmental quality of the municipality

The City Council has reduced its CO2 emissions by 24.5% between 2007 and 2015, which represents a five-year advance in the deadline established for the fulfillment of the commitment made, which would reduce that percentage by 20% in the Year 2020.

The Council of Urbanism, Environment and Huerta, directed by Antonio Navarro Corchón, presented to Europe these results obtained in the last CO2 Emissions Inventory, whose calculation is one of the obligations assumed by the Consistory after its adhesion to the Covenant of Mayors of The European Union in 2008. The aim is to achieve this reduction through three key pillars: improving energy efficiency, using renewable energy sources and raising awareness and training.

Also, the City of Murcia is one of the fifty registered in the National Registry of Carbon Footprint managed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, which quantifies the CO2 emissions derived from services provided by the local government To the citizens through the consumption of electricity and fossil fuels of all the dependencies that are municipal property or over which it exercises control through its management.

Councilman Antonio Navarro explained that both registration and calculation are voluntary, but Murcia has wanted to join in the framework of the actions that the City is doing in the fight against climate change.

Out of context

"We are working in a responsible and intense way, and this has been recognized on several occasions by the European Union, which is why the criticism, out of context, made by the PSOE draws more attention," said Navarro.

He also pointed out that 'our objective is to know what measures and how intensely we should apply them to reduce the factors that affect the deterioration of the environmental quality of the city and we invite the PSOE to join this bet instead of creating unjustified alarms' .
