Murcia participates for second year in the biggest global event against Climate Change (03/08/2017)

This initiative will be held on October 27 in more than 60 cities around the world.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving the quality of life of its citizens and increasing resilience to natural disasters are the challenges presented by Murcia in this event

The Councilor for Urbanism, Environment and Murcia, Antonio Navarro, presented this morning Climathon 2017, the largest global event on Climate Change to be held on 27 October and in which each participating city proposes its own local climate challenge in The vulnerabilities of their environment.

This year will study how the city of Murcia should be in 2030 to increase its resilience to natural catastrophes, reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and improve the quality of life of its citizens in this new climate change scenario .

It is the second edition in which Murcia participates, being an initiative promoted by Climate-KIC that reached last year record numbers of participation with 59 cities of the whole world creating 2,330 ideas and reaching 16.8 million people worldwide.

Navarro has stated that "the goal of Climathon is to achieve valuable and interesting contributions, as well as to establish enriching debates and promote an exciting and positive vision of our city that will be shaped in a design of the city of Murcia for later work."

The participants will complete through a series of dynamics the vision of Murcia for the year 2030, while a graphic artist will simultaneously translate all these ideas into your computer in real time.

During the day, Murcia will connect with other cities, not only Spain, but the rest of the world, and the planet, to exchange and share sensations, experiences, lessons learned and solutions.

There are currently 60 registered cities from 40 countries around the world.

The European initiative Climathon is aimed mainly at undergraduate students and masters, and will have the advice of professionals and with the support of a group of experts on the topics to be addressed.

Participation in them will be limited to 30 people so it will be necessary to pre-register on-line.

In the last edition of 2016, Murcia was one of the three Spanish cities involved in this marathon of ideas, along with the cities of Castellón and Valencia, and the best results of participation.

The challenge was to find solutions to the problems of water scarcity, urban planning and integration of the Murcia garden, all within the framework of the city's Adaptation and Mitigation of Climate Change Plan.

"The best contributions and proposals made by the thirty participants are already part of the document Adaptation Measures to Climate Change of the Municipality of Murcia," said the councilman.

The Climathon was held for the first time in 2015 with 19 cities, the largest public-private partnership in Europe focused on innovation to mitigate climate change and adapt to it, addressing one of the major challenges facing it the European Union.

Murcia adhered in 2016 to the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, with the commitment to reduce its CO2 emissions by 40% in 2030 through a Sustainable Energy Action Plan (PAES), which is currently And a Climate Change Adaptation Plan that has been working since 2015. As in the previous edition of Climathon, this event is an example of a participatory vocation where each of the individual contributions is taken in account.
