Study the violence of the users towards the professionals of Mental Health and Primary Attention (31/07/2017)

Two doctoral theses explore the violence of users perceived by the professionals of Mental Health and Primary Care of the Region of Murcia, since the risk of labor violence presents a special importance in these areas.

The first is "User Violence towards Mental Health Professionals," which was defended by María Sánchez Muñoz two weeks ago.

This research has been structured in two phases.

On the one hand, an anonymous questionnaire was administered to a total of 518 nurses and nursing assistants from four public hospitals in the Region of Murcia (four psychiatric, emergency, maternal and infant and medical hospitalization).

On the other hand, the aforementioned scale was adapted to the Mental Health population using a qualitative and quantitative methodology in a sample of 371 Mental Health professionals from the Murciano Health Service.

The study mentioned has the objectives of knowing the exposure of Mental Health professionals dependent on the Murcian Health Service to hostile manifestations of users, according to sociodemographic and labor variables;

Analyze the relationship between such exposure to hostile behaviors and the presence of possible consequences, such as variations in job satisfaction, burnout, and psychological well-being;

Adapting the Aggresive Behavior Scale-Users (HABS-U) scale, developed in the hospital setting, to the context of Mental Health, as well as to test its psychometric properties;

And finally, determine the professional group and the mental health intervention program that registers higher levels of violence.

The analysis of the sociodemographic and labor variables shows that there are significant differences in the aggressions received according to gender, age, seniority in the job and profession.

In this sense, the profile of greater risk are the women, young, with little seniority in the position and belonging to professionals of nursing and non-sanitary.

The results conclude that the distribution of the risk of exposure to violence is not homogenous within the health personnel, being especially high in Mental Health, so it is essential to establish preventive measures in the most exposed professional groups and services.

The scale adapted to this population is useful to study the different hostile manifestations of users, both physical and non-physical.

The second Doctoral Thesis is "Occupational Health of Primary Care Professionals, Study of User Violence," which was defended last week by Cecilia López García.

In this case to carry out the study were selected 39 centers of the Region of Murcia by simple random sampling, and from there worked with a sample of 670 professionals.

This paper seeks to validate and analyze the psychometric properties of the adaptation of the Hospital Aggressive Behavior Scale-Users to Primary Care;

To know the frequency of exposure to labor violence in professionals in this field;

Identify socio-demographic and labor variables related to exposure to violence;

Determine the professional group most exposed to user violence;

Examine the relationship between exposure to user violence and burnout;

And analyze the impact of exposure to user violence, job satisfaction and empathy on the psychological well-being of professionals.

The analysis of the sociodemographic and labor variables shows that there are significant differences in the aggressions received according to sex, seniority in the position, the realization of continuing training and the profession category.

In this sense the profile of greater risk was women, with a lower age in the profession and who did not carry out continuous training and the most exposed professional group is non-health personnel.

In addition, it has been identified that exposure to violent behavior of users, job satisfaction and professional empathy influence, depending on the professional category, on the psychological well-being scores of Primary Care professionals.

Both Doctorate Theses is directed by the doctors Jose Antonio Ruiz Hernandez and Bartolomé Llor Esteban and they obtained the qualification of outstanding Cum Laude by unanimity.
