The SEMAS intensifies care for the homeless in the heat-intensive days (22/07/2017)

The team of the Mobile Emergency Social Care Service (SEMAS), which is part of the Social Rights Department, led by Conchita Ruiz, has been serving since the beginning of the summer more than 20 people in a situation of social exclusion, without accommodation and exercising the Begging, in order to alleviate the physical consequences of exposure to heat.

The device launched provides these people, who can also present diseases - physical or mental - water, food, clothing, transportation, emergency accommodation and transfer or accompaniment to Jesus Abandoned and RAIS.

'The City Council pays immediate attention to the most vulnerable throughout the year, but we reinforce this work with special campaigns when the temperature is extreme, whether by the high, as now, or by the descent, as it occurs in the winter months , Explained Conchita Ruiz.

This service is developed by establishing personal contact, studying their situation, and generating a link that facilitates the process of intervention and social inclusion of these people living in a situation of exclusion.

The SEMAS carries out a special monitoring around midday and in the afternoon, to avoid the effects on health can cause prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

They work in teams of two people, integrated by a social worker and a local police, serving the citizens with the highest risk, who are provided with means of hydration relevant, while informing them about the strategies they can Take to reduce the impact of heat on your body.

They are also informed about the different municipal social resources at their disposal.

Attention to a man in San Agustín

One of the interventions made in recent days has been to help a man of Galician origin, who had been for days on a bench in Plaza San Agustín, refusing to leave.

In spite of the insistent calls and offer of water by the SEMAS, he did not show any interest in their presence, did not answer basic questions, besides presenting a deplorable state of hygiene.

Faced with the possibility of suffering a mental disorder or psychic deficiency, and with the support of Local Police, 112 was contacted to send an ambulance, which initially refused to access.

After informing him that if he did not voluntarily accept the case, the man finally consented to his transfer to the Reina Sofía Hospital, in order to carry out his medical evaluation.

Simultaneously, the SEMAS is making efforts to contact their families and adopt the necessary measures in their care and assistance process.
