The Old Bridge closes three nights to traffic to complete the analysis prior to its comprehensive rehabilitation (17/07/2017)

The work carried out in recent months has allowed to obtain for the first time a complete digital model in three dimensions, with an accuracy of 1 millimeter, and to navigate interactively from the outside of the bridge to the interior of the vault.El Councilor of Fomento, Roque Ortiz, Stresses that 'we have monitored, scanned and placed sensors in the structure to control and care for every inch of the bridge, which is part of the sentimental memory of all Murcia and will continue to be of future generations'.

The Department of Development, directed by Roque Ortiz, is completing the studies and exhaustive analyzes in the Old Bridge as a necessary step to know exactly its conservation status and to develop a project that allows its integral rehabilitation, which is the final objective.

The information obtained and the forthcoming interventions have been presented this morning by Roque Ortiz, who has been accompanied by the municipal engineer Juan Antonio Blanco, along with Roque Murcia Crespo, director of CEICO, and Antonio Espín de Gea, responsible for The unit of geologic mining technology of the Technological Center of the Marble.

"You can not repair what is not known, consolidate or reinforce what has not been detected, and that is why we are subjecting Puente Viejo to the most complex and profound revision that has surely been made in its 275-year history, Explained Roque Ortiz today, who also stressed the suitability of executing these actions coinciding with the processing of the BIC declaration carried out by the Autonomous Community at this time.

Regarding the advisability of raising this intervention, the Councilor for Development stresses that 'we have monitored, scanned and placed sensors in the structure to control and care for every inch of the bridge, which is part of the sentimental memory of all Murcia and will continue to be future generations'.

This way, the work continues this week with the realization of some surveys in the pavement that will force to interrupt the circulation the nights of tomorrow Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 23 to 6 hours.

Three surveys will be carried out (two in the vertical section of the foundations of the 3rd vault and another in the central stack of the bridge) with a depth of 15 meters.

They will have the starting point on the bridge's own road and will be made to know the fillings of the breasts of the vaults and the subsoil on which they are cemented and of the filling of the central pile and the own subsoil of the foundation.

The results of the surveys will allow a thorough reconnaissance of the terrain and, through the corresponding laboratory tests, have the necessary geotechnical parameters to determine the precise actions of consolidation or stabilization and conservation.

To know precisely where to carry out these surveys, the technicians of the Department of Development have developed some preliminary actions to determine the situation of the bridge from the structural point of view and the elements that make it up.

These interventions have consisted of:

1.- A laser scanning has been developed that has allowed:

To establish for the first time a complete digital mock-up of the bridge in three dimensions, with such precision that any measurement made from it would cause an error in relation to the actual measurement of less than 1 mm.

This exact image of the all elements of the bridge can be rotated and observed on the computer screen from any perspective.

Also, it can be interactively navigated through it penetrating from the outside of the bridge to the interior of the vault.

The previous image supposes to create a fixed photo of the whole bridge that will serve as basis for making comparisons that allow to know the evolution of the surface of the stonework with the passage of time.

An integral catalog of the status of all properly sized masonry surfaces has been obtained, being a faithful reflection of the current state of the stone and allowing possible interventions to be proposed according to needs.

2.- In the third vault, because of its special burial conditions and, therefore, very little ventilation, meters have been placed in continuous to have a record of the oscillations that occur in the humidity and temperature over time, To receive information for actions aimed at conserving and improving the durability of the stone.

3.- A sounding of the interior of the bridge has been made using georadar.

For this, a large number of transversal and seven longitudinal profiles have been made on the pavement, on the surfaces of the vaults 1ª, 3ª and the tajamar, which allowed to know the following data:

bóveda (oculta junto a la hornacina de la Virgen de los Peligros) y de la bóveda norte (junto a la Gran Vía).

vault (hidden next to the niche of the Virgen de los Peligros) and the north vault (next to the Gran Vía).

as dos bóvedas principales del puente, comprobando que son sensiblemente homogéneas, comprendidas entre 80/85 centímetros en toda la bóveda.

two main vaults of the bridge have been analyzed, proving that they are substantially homogeneous, between 80/85 centimeters throughout the vault.

In addition, the stone that composes them lacks internal discontinuities, not being in general cracked.

It has been possible to locate the longitudinal and transverse layout of the infrastructures that cross the bridge body to communicate both sides of the city (potable water pipes, sanitation, telecommunication drawers, etc.).

Thus, the planimetry obtained has made it possible to safely plan the execution points of the three polls.

It has been possible to verify the homogeneity of the materials that compose the filling of the central stack of the bridge.

This initial assessment obtained with the georadar will be confirmed with the surveys that will be executed starting tomorrow.

All this prior geotechnical recognition will allow, always in accordance with the General Directorate of Cultural Assets and with their full knowledge and supervision, to determine the scope of the actions to be carried out in the comprehensive rehabilitation project to be carried out.
