"In total, this month of July 2,400 children of the municipality participate in the 73 Summer Schools coordinated by the Department of Social Rights, in collaboration with other entities of the third sector," said José Ballesta.

A total of 1,700 children benefit from the canteens enabled in 22 of these Summer Schools or the line of aid for the months of July and August that the City Council provides to those families who need it most.

The entities that make it possible to start these projects together with the City Council are Caixa Proinfancia Program, Cáritas, Columbares and Proyecto Abraham.

The first Municipal Plan for Children

Last November Unicef awarded Murcia the seal of the 'Child Friendly City', which recognizes the development of municipal policies that seek to improve the quality of life of children and the defense of their rights.

Since then, the Department of Social Rights has launched the Table of Participation of Children and Adolescents, which gives voice to the minors of the municipality and collects and channels their proposals to improve Murcia, meeting one of the requirements marked By Unicef to obtain the seal of 'Friendly City of the Childhood'.

To this initiative is added the first Municipal Plan for Children in which the Consistory currently works.

In this sense, the mayor said that "among the large Spanish cities, Murcia is the municipality with the highest number of children and adolescents, with more than 91,000 under 18, which represents a percentage of 20.6% over the total Of the population ".

"From the City Hall we are working on the first Municipal Plan for Children that will include contributions from all the Councils, making childhood a cross-cutting element and priority of government action," said José Ballesta, who added that "the defense of Rights of the smallest, especially the most vulnerable, is an imperative for public administrations. "

Close collaboration with Unicef

The City of Murcia maintains a close collaboration with Unicef in different programs including the Children's Rights Week which takes place every November, and which includes the holding of a full municipal children's center, activities for children, Workshops, games, animations, etc.

The agreement signed today manifests the commitment of both institutions to maintain the channels of collaboration to continue innovating in local policies of childhood and adolescence.
