Murcia Medieval and the XXI century coexist in San Esteban (12/07/2017)

The recovery of San Esteban opens to the city after the approval of the Advance of the Master Plan and the beginning of the phase of consultations to neighbors and experts.

"The recovery of San Esteban is part of the integral project 'Medieval Murcia', an action plan that will allow you to walk along a 12th century street at a low point or walk among the canvases of the city wall," said José Ballesta.

A public space to contemplate history and walk through Medieval Murcia, integrated as one of the cultural and tourist resources of international interest of the Murcia of the XXI century.

The recovery of San Esteban opens to the city after the approval of the Advance of the Master Plan and the beginning of the phase of consultations to neighbors and experts.

The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Javier Celdrán, and representatives of the UTE of San Esteban, offered new details on this first advance: an initial study of the environment of San Esteban, led to By a multidisciplinary team composed of 5 architects, 3 engineers, 3 archaeologists, 2 restaurateurs, an economist and an expert in tourism.

In total, 6,500 work hours have been invested which have resulted in a complete inventory that includes each of the elements of the environment and adjacent areas.

In this way, plans of analysis and descriptive of the current state of each one of the elements that compose the Set of San Esteban have been elaborated.

In addition to the archaeological zone declared of Cultural Interest (BIC), the Advance of the Master Plan extends the scope of action to the Palace, Church of San Esteban and adjacent streets, a space that covers an area of ​​about 30,000 m2.

Medieval Murcia: walk along a 12th century street

The mayor informed that "the recovery of San Esteban is part of the integral project 'Murcia Medieval', an action plan that will allow you to walk along a street from the 12th century to below zero in the San Esteban site;

To walk among the canvases of the wall that surrounded the city in Santa Eulalia;

To know the castles and defensive fortifications of the city in Monteagudo, to walk through a medieval palace in Santa Clara and to make a touristic and tourist route that will remember the figure of the wise king, Jaime I and the King Lobo, after the remodeling of the walk Alfonso X " .

"Murcia Medieval is a comprehensive project for the transformation of the city in the short, medium and long term, recovering the medieval identity of Murcia - a substantial part of our roots as a people - and offering a new model of cultural and historical tourism," he said. Ballesta, who added that this initiative "is part of the set of transformative city projects among which are 'Murcia River', Plan of Action of the Orchard and Urban DNA."

In total, 75 dwellings of different archaeological value, 4 precincts, 24 streets, as well as a 'maqbara' or an Arab cemetery and an oratory were counted in the area bounded in the Arrayaca Nueva Arrabal (XII and XIII centuries).

The mayor also referred to the process of recovery of the subsoil wall of the Plaza de Santa Eulalia, "an interpretation zone that is currently less than 100 meters and which will expand to 1,000 square meters, uniting below the city all Zones of the wall with the necropolis and different archaeological elements ".

"In addition, in surface, that is to say, on zero level, it will be possible to follow, by means of the corresponding signaling, where was the wall that has been delimited through a geolocation process", explained the mayor.

Likewise, the remodeling of Paseo Alfonso X El Sabio will tell the story of Medieval Murcia, in a touristic and tourist route that will remember the figure of Alfonso X, Jaime I and the King Lobo.

This environment will unite with the Palace of Santa Clara.

The mayor also said that "in the coming days we will hold joint meetings with the Autonomous Community and the Government of the nation, to advance the Master Plan of Monteagudo Monumental Set, to walk around these fortifications and castles."

Participation and technical excellence

After approval of the Advance of the Master Plan, the next step is to submit this document to public information and open the consultation period between the different neighborhood groups and specialists, to find out which are the solutions with greater social consensus and technical support.

The final questionnaires are currently being developed and channels of participation are being established.

The result of this process will materialize in an Initial Proposal that may be ready by the end of this year, and that will lead to the writing of the Definitive Document for the recovery of this environment.

"Participation and technical excellence will guide the final project for the recovery of San Esteban, returning to Murcia this emblematic square and making its use compatible with the musealization of the site, after its public validation by neighbors and experts, Stressed José Ballesta.

Seven plans for a unique project in Spain:

The Initial Proposal of the Master Plan will materialize in seven concrete plans:

1) Restoration and consolidation of the deposit.

2) Research and archaeological performances.

3) Maintenance and conservation.

4) Interpretation and dissemination of heritage.

5) Economic and financial.

6) Uses, services and activities.

7) Promotion and marketing.

The project will have the advice of the Committee of Experts of a multidisciplinary nature that was approved last week, as well as with the three bodies that act as external observers: the Hispania Nostra Association, the Santa María la Real Foundation and the Institute of Cultural Heritage from Spain.

The perimeter pedestrian walkway is ready

Parallel to the drafting of the progress of the Master Plan, the City Council has carried out the preliminary actions of conditioning the environment.

Work has already been completed on the circular pedestrian promenade in the streets of Jerónimo de Roda and Portillo de San Antonio, as well as Callejón Burruezo, in the absence of the new lighting system to be installed in the coming weeks.

Work has also been carried out on site protection of the archaeological remains, with the care and cleaning of the site and the renovation of the geotextile (the material that protects the remains from the external elements).
