The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Youth and Development Cooperation, Rebeca Pérez, and the Councilor for Social Rights, Conchita Ruiz, received today in the plenary hall about twenty children from refugee camps Saharawi people of Tindouf (Southern Algeria), who are spending the summer with families Murcia host, through the association Sonrisa Saharaui Region of Murcia.
"In total, about 90 children will spend the summer in the region, of which about thirty have been welcomed by families from the municipality of Murcia," said the mayor, who added that "they are small children between 10 and 13 years , Many of which repeat stay, that arrived the last days 24 and 25 of June and will remain here until the 27 and the 29 of August.
The priority objective of this shelter program is to reinforce the health status of these children, who in the refugee camps receive a very basic diet, so they may present nutritional deficits, as well as avoid harsh summers of more than 50 degrees Who live in the Sahara, without means and in the middle of the desert.
At the same time, children acquire new knowledge and learn Spanish.
In addition, the program contributes to raising awareness about the situation of these children, not only of the host families and their environment, but also of the whole society of Murcia.
Experience indicates that both families and children, after an initial adaptation period, value the experience very positively.
Most of the little ones repeat and also acquire a good level of Spanish.
