The UCAM hosts the first course in Spain on cognitive impairment in patients with multiple sclerosis (07/07/2017)

Organized by the Chair of Clinical Neuroimmunology and Multiple Sclerosis of the Universidad Católica, directed by Dr. José Meca, has brought together neurologists and neuropsychologists from almost the entire country to share their knowledge on how to treat these patients, which are 1,500 in The Region of Murcia.

Multiple sclerosis sufferers often suffer from cognitive and psychic disorders, such as memory and attention deficit, difficulty performing certain activities, depression, obsession or anxiety.

They are pathologies with an easy treatment that they have approached in this unpublished course.

"The goal is that neurology professionals who treat patients with MS can apply in their daily practice the knowledge we have shared in this course, such as which drug may be better according to the patient or how they should be treated by those around them" Explains Jose Meca director of the Chair that teaches this course and director of the Multiple Sclerosis Unit of the Virgen de la Arrixaca University Hospital in Murcia.

In the Region of Murcia multiple sclerosis affects one of every thousand Murcia, in total 1500 patients, approximately 50% of them develop a depressive condition.

Dr. Francisco Toledo Romero, a psychiatrist at the Arrixaca Hospital Acute Unit who has participated in this course, says that "the family is a basic pillar for these patients, but they must understand the disease, never demand the patient with depression who The family must understand that their loved one is ill and must follow a treatment, that has its reaction time and that only in this way will it be able to reestablish the patient's state of mind "

The Chair of Clinical Neuroimmunology and Multiple Sclerosis of UCAM continues with its research lines in cognitive affectation, and new therapies.

At the beginning of June, some days were held in which the new therapies and treatments were analyzed.
