The Board of Spokesmen approved a joint motion that will be taken to the next plenary session, to recognize and pay tribute to the Murcians who were deported to the extermination camps between 1940 and 1945. One of the victims still alive is Murciano Francisco Griéguez Pina, who was born in 1918 and spent his youth at Mauthausen.
The Council of Spokesmen of the City of Murcia today unanimously approved the joint motion that all municipal groups will take to the next plenary session to "recognize the deportees of the municipality of Murcia to the Nazi Concentration camps."
85 people originating from the municipality of Murcia were deported to the Mauthausen extermination camp during World War II.
Of these, 53 were killed.
One of the victims still alive is D. Francisco Griéguez Pina, who was born in 1918 and still remembers with sadness and pain the events that dyed his years of youth.
The text of the motion approved today states that "the members of this municipal corporation, as legitimate representatives of the citizens of Murcia, we want to publicly express our admiration and gratitude to those who put their own lives at risk to defend freedom."
"Murcia must pay homage to those who endured extreme suffering and those who ended up paying with their lives.
The victims are all and Murcia wishes to express its support and solidarity with those affected and their families. "
The motion includes three agreements: institutional recognition of the City of Murcia to the deportees in the extermination camps between 1940 and 1945, the installation of a monolith in a street or public square in memory of the victims and a personal tribute by the City Council To D. Francisco Griéguez Pina.
The municipal groups and non-attached councilors will discuss the motion at the next Regular Plenary to be held next Thursday, June 29.
